Water color, called "The American Medium", despite its ancient history and widespread ise, is desirable for Ms freshness, versatility, and durability. It can be used opaouely in the dry-brush technique, or in a more fluid manner which has the wonderful and terrifying property of transparency which exposed the artist’s marks, stroke for stroke. Until the artist learns when to control and when to flow with it, that transparency
may appear weak from lack of commitment or lost from overworking. Unlike oils or acrylics which can be overpainted, scraped and otherwise \ altered with relative ease, water colors mifst be handled with a certain restraint since changes, such as removal of a color may affect surrounding areas' and certainly deteriorates the surface of the paper. It is this fear of making an inalterable mistake that may cause the

artist to approach with too much caution, creating a piece that is tight, dry, and lacking in vitality. To other adventurers, facing off with a white piece of paper may not seem like much of a trip, but to an artist, it is a confrontation which sets the adrenalin going. Success depends largely on attitude and §kill, but the wise artist wifi also be armed with superior materials. An inferior paint may lack not only permanency but also tinting strength. It may take severe I applications to achieve a rich color intensity which cptild be appliiKl in a fell swoop of better paint. Though any paper will do for practice (and trying a variety will extend ability and technique), a fine cotton ray paper will not, only accept the paint well, but also allow for changes., even as much as rubbing with a rag or scraping with a knife. The performance of a brush depends on its ability to hold paint as well a* make marks, and the hair should be long, soft but with spring so that it can flex and regain its original shape with a snap A suitable palette would be.Avhite and hard, such as enamel, with or without wells There are plastic ones on the market if your haven’t an aversion to that marvelous but creepy stuff that never quite washes clean. (An ideal set-up which I use is a dated kitchen cabinet on casters with porcelain top. handy drawer for paint, and storage space below for related supplies.)
Of course, another essential is plenty of clean water which should be immediately availabe in large containers; also soft rags. Though struggling under adverse conditions helps to develop character, working in a well-planned area helps simplify matters. If one is working broadly, one needs to move around for sweeping washes and thrusting strokes; no worrying aboth soiling the doily or hunting for a color. A painting depends a great deal on the pacing: a flurry and a quick commitment; a pause, considering the next stroke; luxoriously dragging a loaded brushwatching the colors run and blend; a series of determined marks; a moment of panic ; etc. The artist works furiously to achieve an image that appears spontaneous and easy.
