On a lovely autumn day in 1914, Gladys Larsen and Clarence Letzkus were united in marriage at St. Mary's Episcopal Church of Stone Harbor. This was an exciting event, as it was the first wedding performed there since the church was built three years previously by

Gladys’ father, John Larsen. St. Mary’s By-the-sea was given a parcel of land on Third Avenue at 95th Street by the South Jersey Realty Company in 1910 and Mrs. David Risiey got busy right away and interested a group of residents in raising money to construct a house of worship. It was completed in 1911 and cost $6,000. Since that time, St. Mary’s has made great strides^ The original structure had a donated organ,Aio heat, and services intlhe summer only with supply ministers from other areas. A generous gift from Mis* Anne Wilmerton in 1932 made it possible to enlarge the church and it now comfortably seats nearly 200. Canon J. Perry Co* is the present pastor. From 1954 to 1959, under the leadership of the first full-time minister, the • Reverend E. Thomas Higgins, the choir Alias Guild and Women’s Guild were formed. A sacristy, parish hall, kitchen and choir room were added. A memorable happening during this period was the first Confirmation to be held at St. Mary’s. Bishop Alfred Banyard came from Trenton and administered the Sacrement to 17 new members. Many Stone Harborites have worked wholeheartedly over the years to bring St. Mary’s Episcopal Church to its present status. Among them are Mr. and Mrs. Philip Mixsell and Mrs. James Otten. ThQtMixselb have served^i^fhenever and wherevoqpneeded for over two decades. Mrs. Otten belongs 'to Episcopal Church Women and Altar Guild and spends much time on the annual bazaar and other fund-raising projects. A lady who has been on the scene for many moons is Mrs. John Bat tendieri, who was one of St. Mary’s first Sunday School teachers and is now a member of the Vestry. I am grateful to Nancy Ritchie for these interesting facts. By the way, Mrs. Ritchie came to Stone Harbor 27 years ago and has been working for St. Mary’s for over 20 of those years. She is a member of ECW and of the Altar Guild and is now seated on the Vestry.
