OCEAN AND BAY SOUNDINGS By Boyd Tyler

Weakfish continued to bite off Hereford Inlet-the most recnt report I have was from Captain Tom Roberts on the "My Gal" who had 30 Sunday for his party. All along the Beach front surf men were scoring well on Weakfish and blues, and even the Bay was producing nice weakfish up around Bug Light. The big stopper this weekend, though was another cruel blow from the Grim Reaper, as He clam led another long time member of our fishing cornmunity-Elmer W. Higgtos Jr. passed away SeptMnJxr 27; and a host of fishermen and Gunners will miss this well thought of Captain. I've spoken of him many times in my columns. Our friendship spanned over 20 years, so my own personal loss is almsot undescribable. The Joss to our angling community is even greater. He operated Villas Seafood Market for 2% years, and cleaned over 6,000 drum in his time. Bill Halbruner, another friend of long standing, stood by Elmer all through is illness; and Bob Hertzog and I tried our best too. He was a Vice President of the Cape May Co.-Hatteras Anglers-a long time member of Bayshore Sportsmen club in addition to writing gunning licenses and clamming licenses. In past days he flew an airplane off the Wildwood Beach, from North Wildwood all over the Island, and after that flying spree he ran a party boat in Delaware Bay. I couldn't begin to speak of his ip^^y. contributions becausejOwre isn’t room re, but always his span of was a love of the outdoors and the sea that never left him. His wife Margaret said, as he

lay there at Evoy’s with a ship on the wall in back of his casket, "Elmer’s Sailing Away." His Son Ted, and his brother Russell echoed this as did all his family. Captain Elmer was a man with a heart as big as his body. He was a true friend to me, and I will miss him beyond explanation. Farewell old friend. Sail on to that promised land that you’ve earned so well to the place where the tide is always right, and the fish are always present-where the woods are green with spring, and the ouail rise to your step, and deer spring out of the nearest hedgerow. Another Ship^ passes in the night, and still we must go on. My life was richer for your presence. Shark fishing has picked up here on theJersey Cape recently, and it could be good for several w^ks yet. The latest catch was a 217pound blue sharlf by Bill Cresse, of Rio Grande. He was fishing out in Baltimore Canyon with Capt. Jim Lummis, on the "F>sh N' Fool" out of Cape May. It was weighed in at the Inn shark fishing club's scales in the Villas. The

club has quit»a few entries this year, and they’re planning on having their annual awards banquet at the Inn during the first week in November. Swordfishing, which has dropped off some, because of the time of the year got a big boost about a week ago down in Virginia when J. Horace Murray Jr. landed a 441-pound broadbill off of Wrightsville Beach. It’s about time for stripers to begin appearing In our waters. Ronnie Tomplins, of Villas, was in yesterday; and said he'd like to plan a trip in another week or sodownintherips. Thobest success thats been had on these striped sided gamefish has been .with live eels fished along the bottom, so be sure you line up a source of supply before the season gets here. They tend to be a little scarce when the stripers get running right. Right now, I believe you cas get eels from Fred Layton Jr in Dias Oeek, and Dick Wycis on Delsea Drive. They’ll keep a long while in an eel car in the water, so you better get ♦hem now.
