The other day when John Magnarro and I were running the Janie T VII up to Hereford Inlet for weakfish I saw a large flight of geese making a deep “V” in the sky, and it popped in my mind that if* Just about time to pick up the gear, and head to the Southland for some fishing. Fred Maurer, of Cold Spring, was telling me on the phone that he’s got his boat out of the water, and next week be and Ms wife Jean are heading for Florida. Right after that I ran into Sid Hess, of Wildwood Crest, in John Pappas restaurant across from Cape Island’s West Basin, and Sid toM me that he and Dot had Ms sailboat all ready for a trip down the Inland Waterway to the
Sunny South.
Now, I’m not figuring on heading down quite that far, but when the Ferry pulls out next Saturday morning-Good Lord willing I'll be on it with Andy Grace and John Magnarro, in my Scout, for a trip to the Outer Bands of North Carolina in search of those Bronze backed tackle busters-the channel Bass or Red Drum - that have made Hatteras famois. John Fisher and Bill Halbruner will be with us in John’s van, and Charlie Cantz will be there with Ms van too, as will Frank Hineline and George Feitz, of Cape May; Luke Cordner, of Stone Harbor,

figures lie’ll be coming in Sunday; and Mel Hirffer and Ronnie Tompkins, of the Villas, figure on making it sometime around the first of the Bob Hertzog, of Haddon Heights, is going to be in Florida, and he figures he’ll catch s bus to Hatteras, and arrive on Wednesday to fish the rest of the week with us, and then ride home with one of ow gang. This will make ig> the fall trip of the Cape May Oo.-Hatteras Adlers. We’D be staying at the Atlanthr View hotel under the watchful eye of Hall A Ray Gray; and well be out there fishing the shoals and Gulf Steam with Captain Bill Foster on the “Albatross H” - if the weather lets us go. But otherwise, we’ll be fishing the beach for those spot-
tailed gamesters.
Ibis will make the 25th year I’ve made the trek to the “Graveyard of the Atlantic", and I’ve never tired of it. We’ve lost a lot of the old timers in the Cape May Co.-Hatteras Anglers since the club first started in 1957; and this year two of our favorite members: Wayne Fraley, of Wilmington, and Elmer Higgins, of the Villas, won’t be with us, and nobody could replace that pair, but we have to keep on going after those channel bass till our number’s up, because once you’ve caught one, you're hooked for life, and on other game fish gives you quite the same type of thrill. Our red and black
jackets are recognized on
the outer banks, because they know of the fish catching legend we’ve established. If we get good luck and some good weather, we’ll probably have a lot of Ules to tell when we get back, because not one single trip that we’ve ever made has been exactly the same. Next week, hopefully. I’ll be back with some of those stories, soget ready. In the meantime I started to talk about John and I going weakfisMng in Hereford Inlet. We arrived down there with Capt. Paul Thompson, on the } •^QglelH”, and Captain / Steve Rea on the "Bivo’’, and Capt. Guy Diantonio, on the "El Toro II”, and the weakfish realty bit. John and I rigged up with two hook rip, and strips of squid to which we added a top bait of mullet, which we had gotten from Jim’s Tackle, and this is just what those Sea trout wanted. When the smoke cleared away we had 19 nice weakfish, and were back at the dock by 12:30. Captain Frink Cassedy on the “Lady Grace" ran down off the middle of the Avalon beach with a party, and they caught a boxful of those beauties. In on the Beach the First Annual Wildwood Surf Fishing tournament was being held, and Char he Glenn told me that the winner in this event beached a 12pound bhiefish, while the second place man had an 11-pound tidemnner weakfish, so it looks like surf fishing should hold up for another week or two.
