Christmas is coming! Do you know where to get your goodies? I was talking to Florence Griffith the other day and was fascinated to learn of all the beautiful and unusual holiday presents that can be purchased at The Cape May County Historical and Genealogical Society Museum. Florence is in charge of the gift shop and is ably assisted by Fran Van Ness, Jean Otten and Mary Coffee. The historical doll collection caught my eye. These little ladies are dressed in authentic period gwns, and each has a legend attached. There’s Elizabeth Holmes, who resided here circa 1775, Phoebe Townsend, in her Quaker costume of that period, Virginia Dare, Martha Washington, and several others to choose from. There’s also Cape May diamond - Jewelry, trapunto pillows, books for children and many about our county's history, as well as delightful stocking stuffers. „ If you are planning to send gifts in the mail the museum’s offerings are perfect as they are easy to wrap and do not cost an arm and a leg in postage. Nearly all of the items are made by local craftsmen. It is not necessary to tour the museum in order to visit the gift shop; it’s open year-round from 10 to 4 (except Mondays). Barbara Corson, secretary for the Society, tells me that Stone Harbor has many volunteers in the museum. J. Harold Conner, Jo Cotton, Anne Hendee, Connie Sands,

Dorothea Pfeiffer and Peter Portner serve as guides and on various committees. There are also husband and wife tea msKitty and Robert Henderson, Winfield and Mary Weer, Bill Van Ness working with his wife Fran, and Horace Griffith with Florence. The John Holmes House, located on Route 9 in Cape May Court House, was acquired by the Society four years ago, and was recently officially declared an historic landmark. The museum has daily tours, and within its walls are endless interesting and educational exhibits. It is a fine example of what hard work and dedication by a group of Cape May Countians can accomplish, and we are- grateful |9 them. Do ancient graveyard! fascinate you? The one across the road from the museum is especially interesting as many early pioneers from the county are laid to rest there, among them Elizabeth Holmes. Visit the Cape May County Historical and Genealogical Society Miseum. You’ll find it very rewarding!
