The Psnther Msrchlnx Band at Middle Township High School made an outstanding perforin,nc at Veterans Stadium in Phils, Oct. 27. when, competing in Group Lit finished as the National Runner-up in the Bth Annual Marching Band Directors of America National Championships. This was the second consecutive year the Panthers have^ finished In McGuire Given Columbus Award James McGuire was honored by the Sylvester Grande Lodge Order Sons of Italy in America Oct. 21. McGuire was awarded the 40th annual Christopher Columbus Achievement Award. The affair was held at the Hofbrau in Wildwood. Over 200 person

attended.

The Lodge also honored students from Wildwood High School and Wildwood CathoUc High School, for essays written on the life of Christopher Columbus. The winner from Wildwood • High School was Allison Kirig. The winner from Wikhtood High was Christopher$ole. The committee in charge of the ceremonies included: Leon Fulginiti, Chairman, (has. Catanoso, Awards, Paul Cappelli, Tickets, Pete Ricco, Dinner, Cookie Jultfe, Toastmaster, Frank Yannone, Menu. The Group I Division featured the toughest competition of tip evening with 16 bands competing for the National title. Among the outstanding bands which the Panthers defeated were defending 1978 National Champions, Eastern Regional High School, the defending Group II Chapter Chame on, West Deptford High hod, The Massachusetts Eastern Circuit Champions. St. Joseph’s C.Y.O. Band, the Hudson, Mass and the St. Williams C.Y.O. Band from Boston, Mass.

In addition, the Panthers defeated all the New Jersey entrants including * Washington Township Paulsboro and former Atlantic Coast Group II Champions, Pen ns grove. The Pennsylvania champions who competed were Interboro Delaware County Champions from Prospect Park, Pa., former National Champion and Atlantic Coast Champions, Catasauqua High School, Chapter III Champions Salisbury High School from Allentown, Pa., and the parochial powerhouse ArchBishop Wood High Sc hod from Wanihtister, Pa. This Sunday, the Panthers win travel to Gibbsboro, N.J. to defend their title as Chapter I Champions. A spectator bus will be run to the event so that the Middle Township followers may lend their support to this superb aggregation of musicians.
