The annual fall trip of the Cape May Go., Hatteraa Anglers was one of frustration, good catches, and beautiful weather. Frustration in the fact that the club produced not even one channel baas, but happiness and good catches on the Albatross II with Captain BUI Foster as different members of the group took a trek out to the Gulf Stream with Mm. Andy Grace started the trip off with catches of pan size blues on-Sunday, then on' Monday John Mangarao, Charley Cantz, Luke Cordner, and I made
up the first group. John, Charlie, and Luke each caught a blackfln tuna In the 10 to 12 pound class, and Luke caught a smaller blackfln to be high man, while I was having a day wh^re I missed every bite that came my way, except for an Albacore that somehow got on my line. On the second day, BiU Ha lb rimer and John Fisher (who arrived late Monday), accompanied Charley Cantz, John Manga rao and I on the "Albatross IT’. This was an even better day because everyone but Bill Halbruner (who caught a nice dolphin) got a black-

fin Tuna, and John Manga rao caught a 14 pound citation winner; then at the end of the day John Fisher pulled our eggs out of the basket with a 40 pound wahoo that was 58 inches long. The fight that fish gave John will be remembered by everyone on board, and between Captain Oliver O'Neal and we finally got Mm gaffed and in the box, and that’s all I’ll write on that episode. Wednesday dawned bright and clear and Big Jack Osborne checked in at the middle of the day. We had tried unsuccessfully to find Capt. Bill so Andy Grace, Capt. Oliver O'Neal, John Manga rao and I took the ferry to Ocracoke to Find Captain 'niureton GaskiH. Wemdn't find Thurston, but we got a wopderful tour of the village with Captain Oliver directing the show. On arriving back in Hatteras we made a call over to Thurston's house, and tenatively made arrangements to fish with Capt. BiU Gaskill on the “Akla G". Bill didn’t make it back from Norfolk in time, but Jack Osborne, John Mangarao and I viewed three red drum on Capt. Thurston's "South Wind” that set us on fire. The next morning we caught the first ferry, and took off with Capt BUI GaskiU for the humps back of Ocracbke inleteverything seemed ready for red drum when John Mangarao hooked and landed a 14-pound blue fish that really gave Mm a tussle. Capt. Thurston pulled up with a party alongside of us, and proceeded to catch giant sting-rays-four of them one right after the other. Tbe action didn’t materialize on Red drum, so we fished our time out, and headed for the dock. That eve mg both boat got into drum with their other perties-3 for Capt. Thurston, and 4 for Capt. BiU. So, the next morning we were on the first ferry again with high hopes of filling the box with those bronze-backs. Capt. BiU GaskiU put us in the same place as the day before, and suddenly my line took off, but it was a 13V4 pound blue that we landed Instead of drum. Wheeler Ballance said as we prepared to leave Hatter on Saturday, "well, you boys were about a week early, but I know you'll be back next spring, if the Good Lord lets you, to get after those drum. 12 member* made the trip, and we had a nice catch with a trophy for John Fisher, but those spot-tails eluded us. That’s what makes it fun, though, becaiae if we tofak those drum every lime we’d get an idea that it was easy, and the challenge would be lost. One fellow who <dld succeed was Dr. Joseph Raab. We met him on the way down on the Cape May-Lewes ferry, and he was waiting in the lot for the 5:30 ferry on the way back. He had a tale to tell about catching a 40 pound plus red drum in the middle of the day Wednesday off of Ramp 14, that sort of made us envious, but we were all happy for Ms success.
