PAINTING' from the ground
While sketchinc from a figure on a Greek vase to strengthen my drawing through practice, I sought that elusive something which brings beauty to form when I noticed an alignment of ear, chin, and elbow. Each of the painted figures on the vase had this characteristic, and as I leafed through other sources, I found it to be the rule. With this alignment being oply a segment of the whole image, imagine how. many other interrelated parts there might be. The art T>f Ancient Greece has inspired artists for the past seven millenia, and it is not yet obsolete, though mass production has filled our world and Uvea with structures and do-dads that are remote from the pure aesthetic principles of old. The redeeming quality of contemporary clutter is the fact that it is transitory. A marble McDonald’s is not the answer for the principles of Greek Art are that which are timeless, rather than the materials. The key to this ancient Art fk the idea of harmony, the process of balance within which our universe functions, We have come to view man as controller or victim of the system rather than an integral part of it and thus have lost the ability to see the balance. Consider how this attitude may affect our daily Uvea and you may have a better understanding of the ‘'Classica'l" In Art. Imagine two people on the beach: a Classicist and a Modern. The Classicist might be sitting on the sand after having slipped off his toga, watching the , sea, hearing it, feeling It, smelling it, tasting it. Though the term “Classicism" sounds stuffy, its meaning is quite the opposite. In the 1800's, when Neo-Classicism was the rage in Europe, the exteriors of Greek Art were assimilated by artists who did not grasp the concepts within. There was bountiful production of mythological themes, or scenes set among the ruins, and plenty of maidens in togas. A few rare artists understood the principles and passed them down through their works. These principles of harmony in design, ideflism, and symbolism have been presented in unique ways, blended with the artist’s style. Cezanne expressed the Classical attitude when he suggested; "Simplify. Reduce all dements to a cone, sphere, or cube". In other words, look for similarities rather than 'differences. And then tie it all together into a unified
