Ireland: Land Of Magic
By J.A. Cunningham "Aren’t you afraid?” When we said we were taking a trip to Ireland, this question was the most freouent reaction. Actually, we were probably safer than we would have been in Philadelphia or New York City. The violence in Ireland takes part in the "six counties" of Ulster, in the northeast quadrant of the island which is part of the British Commonwealth. Few tourists visit there. The Republic of Ireland is a peaceful land crammed full of historical relics of some which predate Christianity; spectacular

Ireland on organized toursand there is nothing wrong with that. In a week, you can see many of high spotsBlarney, Killamey, the Ring of Kerry, Waterford, Dublin, etc. But that just gives you a taste. When you live in an Irish cottage, shop at the local stores, talk to the people, and drive on your own, you experience more of the real
flavor of the country. The cottage where we
stayed was on a hill overlooking the town and lakes of Killamey and was surrounded ljy the bright green, stone-walled fields typical of the Irish countryside. The cattle in these fields only wandered from pasture to pasture, but

and his dog with them, in which case the dog would direct them to the side in short order. Otherwise, we would slowly maneuver the car through the herd, hoping none of them would feel the urge to lean against it. Occasionally, a Billy goat would be dancing among the cattle. It is an old superstition that the cattle will not contract brucellosus If they are accompanied by the Billy goat. In the hillier areas, the road obstacles become sheep - but they are more agile in getting out of the way. "What was the weather like?" But then the sun comes out and beautiful rainbows appear. The rain is often like a mist - you’ve heard of Irish Mist - and doesn't seem to hinder people from whatever they are doing. You learn to work around it. If the TV weathermen predict "bright spells" or "sunny spells" for the next day, you plan a trip where senerey is the primary goal. Otherwise, you spend your day pursuing historical attractions. "Do you have your ‘Wellies’?" was the first question I was asked by an Irishman Everyone has "Wellies' (Wellingtons), or what I used to call 'gumboots’. Even on a sunny day, the grass gleams with dew. Many of the things you want to see demands walk through fields or grass-Druidic stone Mrcles, 4th century unmfetaredT stone forts, ancient abbies, monasteries and castle keeps-even the walkways through the gardens of a manor houae may be of mown grass. To be continued.
