Harbor drawbridge.

It aeema they were down in Cape May and weathered in ao to apeak, and they decided to do a little exploring. After Investigating all the local apots in Cape May and Wildwood, they wound up on the Stone Harbor bridge where they were In-

troduced to a completely new way of fishing for big tiderunners. First they lowered weighted trebel hooked lures off the north end of the bridge into a school of small bunkers. They hooked live bunkers and transferred them to a bucktail. dropped it off the south side of the bridge into the tide. Immediately they latched onto some real big weakfish which were

feeding right under the perch that has been provided for fishermen on the bridge. All told they captured 17 nice big weakies with John Polli getting first a seven pounder and then a nine pound trophy fish. Bob said the others were all three pounds and up so the next time you can’t get out thefe because of rough seas, remember there are bridges and piers to try here on our Cape of Nature. Weakies were still in the ocean too when the weather lets the boatmen go off Hereford inlet, and down through the slough that runs off Diamond Beach. Captain Frank Cassedy, on the "Lady Grace,” filled the box several times this past week for his parties there, and a lot of other good catches were reported in this area. The big news, however, broke later'in the week on Election Day as several of the regulars broke open the striper run down in the rips. Ronnie Tompkins, who Captains the "Ron-EU" called Election Day evening to inform me that he and Bert Smith, of the Villas, had hit pay dirt there with a 384 pound linesider for Bert which Ron gaffed. John Andrus of Millville who runs the "Top Banana," hit two stripers on Jive eels near where Ron was fishing and a boat called the "Bad News" had one of those beauties too. The day before John Andrus and his wife had one striper each on these live killer baits that have taken so many trophy fish off Cape May Point. Live eels are still plentiful in selected spots on the Delsea Dr., and in Joe Rodia’s; and South Jersey Fishing center, but you better get some fast because as soon as this news gets out, there’s going to be a scarcity. Yes, the striper run has started, and the fish have been biting in those churning waters at the lower end of Cape May. One word of caution here, though, please watch the weather signs and be careful. This place where the ocean and the bay meet is no place to fool around. R’s dangerous and you can get in a lot of trouble there in a hurry. Captain Gene Crowley who ran the "Ogle 11” for years and years asked me if any stripers had been spotted on five fathom - bank. He recalled years ago running into a large school right up on top with their tails out in that spot, so it’s a good idea to kaep your eyes open wherever you fish in the ocean these days. I suggest going with an experienced person at this time of the year whether it be the rips or offshore because there just aren’t as

many boats fishing nowadays and it could cost you dearly if you don’t have the know how to handle the heavy waters that this time of the year produces. CAPE MAY - In a time of rising prices and dollar devaluation it is hard to say yes when someone asks you for a monetary contribution. Not only did the Recruits at the Coast Guard Training Center h Cape May say yes to the Combined Federal Campaign Drive this faU, but they contributed a total of

$28,500.

According to Lt. jg. Don Trone, the Recruit Regimental Campaign Manager, this amount represented 84 percent of the Cape May County goal. Mr. Trone went on to say that the recruits needed very little encouragement to contribute, just the opportunity to do so. These strong and healthy young men and women represent one of the least likely sections of our society to need the services they have raised these funds for. The money donated to the campaign is distributed to local, national and international non-profit organizations. Some of the

funds will stay in the t___ May area and benefit the local needy. Most of it will go overseas to underdeveloped nations and

disaster tom areas
