Middle Homecoming Breaks From Tradition
By Bill SKerman COURT HOUSE — For the first time in 15 years there was no parade, and no floats at the Mddle Township High School football Homecoming Day game with Ocean City. Can tradition be flaunted like
this?
NO, say the irate parents of the Panthers. “Yes”, says Bob Penkethman, Vice-Principal of the High School,, representing the school authorities. It has to be for several reasons, Penkethman said. The school decided against the tradition festivities because: all the work on floats has been done by a 10 percent segment of the class, -expense of materials for
floats increased:
-lack of support on part of lads during mischief weekworkers were harassed by
vandals.
The benefits of the new system are: •Students get involved with decorating the halls of the high school with a theme for each class. Themes this year were seniors-‘*Dcn of The Panthers'*', Juniors, “School Spirit,” sophomores, unnamed, Freshman “Panther Graveyard." -An awakening of class spirit while decorating is taking place. -Sale of gadgets connected with Homecoming Day. I.e. shakers, pompons: a spirit chain at 5
cents a link raised $500. Penkethman calls this “a more rewarding exK rience than the floats cause many more students got involved.” At the dance which was held the night before the game so that the football team could attend and see the coronation of the queen, the affair was highlighted by the selection of Beth Byrne as Homecoming Queen. She was escorted by Mitchell Hahd, defensive back on ' the Panther Varsity. Miss Byrne was attended by her court consisting of: Seniors: Tina Petrica, Terry Sanders, Kathy Blackmore and Debbie Laspine. They were escorted by Jimmy Killian,

Sophomores: Linda Turnier and Beth Richardson escorted by Dave Rombferger and George Toz our. Freshman: Cheryl Van Fleet and Roxanne Morano escorted by George Tozour and Todd Coolidge. The queen was crowned by the Grand Marshall chosen by the student bddy. The Grand Marshall turned out to be a thoroughly surprised Bill Sherman. Sherman keeps young (although he is a senile citiren) by keeping in touch with Middle Township High School events. He joins an illustrious honor roll of Grand Marshalls of the past 15 years including Dr. Theodore Johnson, Superintendent of Schoob of Middle Twp., Rosie Robinson, Number One Fan from Dennisvilie, Jerry Costande, Premier Public Address Announcer, Goose Doughty, Father of Memorial Field, Laura Mae Harris, wife of George Harris and Bill Thompson, insurance agent from Dennis Twp. The Homecoming Queen is chosen by popular election of her classmate. Voting by classes all but 10 finalists are then screened out and a run-off election is held among these survivors. The coronation of th« queen is the highlight of the Homecoming Dance. At the game during halftime intermission, the Grand Marshall and the Queen and her court were reintroduced to the football fans. Credit for this spectacular, successful homecoming should go to faculty sponsors of the Student Council, Susan Shepherd and Sue Moyer, ably assisted by the hardworking crew of the Student Council.
