Tom Petty has returned to recording and "Damn the Torpedoes" (MCA) is the exciting, consistent long-player his first two albums hinted he was capable of making. Petty is still writing and singing songs that freely borrow from The Rolling Stones and The Byrds, yet now his band, The Heart breakers, perform as a unit, instead of just backing musicians. The end result is more natural, which should please Petty's many fans. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers are going to be one of the top acts of the eighties. A few years ago, JohnPrine was Just another Dylan-clone, writing simple, straight-forward folksy tunes. On his new album, “Pink Cadillac" (Asylum), Prince branches out a bit by trying to sing rockabilly. Expecting the worse, I’m happy to rejvt Prine does an admirable job, even if he doesn't cdme cjpse to matching the intensity of Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis or Carl Perkins. Prine’s followers shouldn’t be scared away because much of this is still in the vintage Prine style. However, John Prine should be commended for taking some chances. There aren’t many singersongwriters who try to do something other than sticking with their safe formulas. \ fi Tantrum’s "Rather Be Rockin'" (Ovation) has a rougher edge to it than their debut. This should

viously what they’re trying to do. Tantrum is racky to have three dynamic women vocalists, who sing with power and conviction. One charted single and there'll be no stopping this group. It was a shock to find Gary Numan and Tubeway Army’s "Replicas" (Atco) doing well on the charts. For those who haven’t heard this album on FM rock stations, Gary Numan is from England and his music has been heavily influenced by David Bowie, Brian Eno and Ultra vox The sound is thick and haunting as Numan is fond of layered keyboards and ominous melodies. He has two ot%r albums in England, which will, hopefully, be issued on our shores soon. Another British band, Magazine just did an American club'tour. Since most of the dates were sold out, it makes sense that Virgjn Records has decided to release both their albums. Magazine’s sound varies between mechanical singing and powerful rocking. At this point, it's hard to imagine Magazine getting an American hit, but "real Life" and "Secondhand Daylight” should insure them of a stateside cult following.
