The American Cancer Society has launched an attack on the difficult habit with The Great American Smokeout, a campaign to get Cape May County smokers to pledge a day without cigarettes on November 15. One of the Society’s goals is to focus public attention on the thighly successful qtdtsmoking clinics that have srpung up in the lasf several years. The valbe of these clinics is largely in the psychological help and reinforcement that smokers get from meeting and talking with others who share the problem. The clinics offer an environment in which smokers can explore their own smoking habit with the help of others. Through the help of a moderator who has quit smoking and a group discussion of smoking problems, each member attempts to change his behavior. The clinics are in effect a retraining program. One of the tactics used
helps the smoker zero In on , his motivation. A pack of cigarettes is wrapped with a piece of ruled paper. Each time the pack is unwrapped, the smoker logs in each cigarette and rates the importance of it on a 1-5 scale. He also notes the time, the activity, how he feels at that moment, and notes a reason for quitting. M one day of wrapping and unwrapping, this simple device makes the smoker realize how many cigarettes he consumes unconsciously. Sometimes a smoker decides that he can’t be bothered with such “games” and simply doesn’t smoke another cigarette. For more information about Quit Smoking Clinics, contact the Cape May County Unit of the American Cancer Society, Curtis Miller, Smoking Facilitator, Routes 9 and 47, Rio Grande, N J. 08242. Or call the Unit Office at 986-1154. All “Stop smoking” literature is free for the asking. Doit today!
