OMAN ANB BAY SOBNBINOS By Boyd Tyler
By Boyd Tyler The weekend of the tenth was one of unforeseeable weather, especially down in the Rips. Saturday dawned bright and clear, and full of .promise, but by the afternoon the wind had worked the ocean to a pitch to where it was unfishable. On Sunday it again 'looked like it was going to settle down, so Ronnie Tompkins (of the Villas) and I headed the “Janie T Vll” down for a try at the Rips off Cape May Point. Earlier in the week Ronnie had gotten a pound linesider out of these churning waters, for his second striper of the year on his boat, the "Ron-Ell", so we* figured we had a change. We had just rounded Cold Spring Jetty, heading South, and our misgivings began. The sea was a lot
heavier than we thought. Just as we were making the turn to head back home John Andreus and his wife from Millville, on the "Big Banana", came out of the inlet, and said he thought the Rips would be fishable, so we fell in behind him, and headed again towards the .churHing waters off Cape Maa Point. On the way dowmAve learned that the "Bigj# Banana" had gotten two stripers the day before- a fiye pounder, and a 20 pound one. As we approached the Ripe, the "Rod Buster", captained by Gaude Evans of Millville, announced that he had gotten a 49 pound lunker in that area only the day before; and there was also mention of a 46-pound beauty. So our hopes built up. There were about 10 boats trolling and drifting eels in the Rips, and the water was whipped to a frenzy by the wind, but no one had connected. We made five passes through the turbulent waters, while the other boats around us did the same, but no one caught anything. So we finally called it a day, and came back through the Cape May Canal to our^ dock at Roseman’s Boat Yard. As far as I could determine no one got a striper on this the day before Veterans day. And on Vets’ Day itself the wind blew so fiercely that everyone fcj^uT the successes of thWTeek before.
There have been quite a few stripers taken this year on live eels, and if the wind ever lets up, we should see quite a few more taken. Big
bluefish were prevalent in this area earlier in the week, and they cleaned up a lot of live eels the anglers were using for bait. But the storms that played havoc with our fishing ( have chased these big stammers back off shore. I hope we’ve seen the last of the big choppers that tore up so many baits.
