Where are members of the Middle Twp. High School football team of 1947 now? This team, one of the strongest in South Jersey during the season, was coached by Tom Crist who had installed a winged-T offense that rolled over the opposition and ran up some big scores. Tom Crist went on to Millville High the next year and from there to Shippensburg College in Pennsylvania where he was football coach for a long period of time. He still comes back to visit this area in the summer and always looks up Mike Vistenzo. He has a son, Malcolm and is now taking life easy as the golf coach at Shippensburg. His line-up that year consisted of the following players: John Roberson from Stone Harbor was the triple threat in the backfield, running, passing and kicking. John matriculated at Indiana University, where he played under the legendary "Bo” McMillin. He returned to Middle Twp. High as a Physical Education teacher and coached both the football and tennis teams. He also came in for some criticism

when the Middle teachers went on strike and he refused to coach the football team while the strike was on. As a result, one game had to be cancelled and the football season at Middle was ruined. Now John is retired from coaching and lives with his lovely wife, the former Dorothy Wooten on Schoolhouse Lane. He golfs and plays tennis in this leisure time.He is also chairman of the physical education department at the high school. John and Dorothy have two sons, John Jr. and Craig, both of whom excelled in sports. A1 Garrison from Stone Harbor was the football brain of the team running the wing-T from his quarterback spot. After a career in the Post Office in Stone Harbor, he is now the proprietor of the Court Market on Mechanic St. in Court House. It is to him that this reporter owes a debt of gratitude for the information he supplied me about his teammates. Joe DeRose is another Stone Harbor resident who starred on this team. Joe was the bulwark of the defense and in those days everyone played both

ways. Joe was the best linebacker that this observer ever saw in high * school football. He played football at Villanova University under Jim Leonard and was noted for his defensive ability. He also joined the Stone Harbor Post Office where he still works and moonlights as a house painter. His wife operates TridiJo’s Piiza Parlor in Stone Harbor and. Joe has a young son who gives promise of filling his illustrious father’s shoes in football. Although only in the first grade, he already weights 80 pounds. Joe still sees the Middle Twp. teams play football and is quick to appraise the game and yell out to the coaching staff advice on playing the game. Tony Chapperone played in the backfield. He came to Middle from Roman Catholic High in Philadelphia and quickly established himself as -a solid player. He went on to SHIPPENSBURG WHERE HE PLAYED ON Coach Crist’s team. He made a career of selling sporting goods and was Utet heard of in California. TO BE CONTINUED
