ism was a special year for one Stone Harbor resident. The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers was established, William Henry Webb founded Webb Institute of Naval Architecture, and John C. Niedermafr was bom. Mr. Niedermair waa awarded a scholarship to Webb In 1914. graduated first in his class, and thereafter devoted his lifetime to naval architecture and marine engineering. "Father o(\ our Modem Navy," Mr. Niedermair has guided the basic designs of S.000 U.S. Navy and merchant vessels. The LST, “workhorse of World War II," was his brainchild. One of his earliest challenges was the salvage of S-5I, which had been sunk at sea in a collision. A high ranking Navy man said that Mr. Niedermair raised the sub "with a lead pencil." 1978 was the year in which The American Society of Naval Engineers presented the coveted Harold E. Saunders Award to John Niedermair "for hia unequalled and unparalleled contribution lo the-design of ships of the United States Navy over a span of more than so years.” Past honors include the Gibbs Brothers Medal from The National Academy of Sciences in 1970, the Distinguished Civilian Service Award In 1946, Career Service Award from the National Civil Service League In 1956 (the only Navy candidate ever to be so recognized), the David W. Taylor Medal In 1956, and an annual award made in Mr. Niedermalr's

honor by the Association of Scientists and Engineers for the beet paper on ship design. Today he received the Golden Certificate for 50 years in The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers Mr Miedermafr la also written about In "Who'S Who In America.” I sake Mr. Niedermair how he and his wife, Ethel happened lo settle in Stone HarboV. When they decided to acquire a seashore property, they traveled from Sandy Hook to Cape May in search of something

to their liking. On their way bock north they saw a sign reading "Stone Harbor.” "What's at Stone Harbor?" they asked each other. They came, they saw. and they stayed. John built a house among the dunes in 1950 and in 196S it became their permanent home. The Niedermair* were married for 50 years when Ethel died in 1973. There are five

sons, three daughters. 35 grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren scattered throughout the Unted States. Ethel Niedermair was very outgoing lady and she expecialiy enjoyed the activities of the Seniors We're happy that she and John followed that arrow to find out "What's at Stone Harbor?”
