Shelton College Fate Dp To The Courts

CAPE MAY - The fate of Shelton College was to be decided in a state Superior Court session held today

(Wednesday)

In a decision handed down Nov 15. the school, operating without a state license since it moved hack to its Cape May campus from Florida this fall, was granted permission to remain in operation for one The state attorney general’s office has asked that the college hacked by fundamentalist preacher Carl Mclntire be shut down until its ap^ plication is approved by the N.J. State Board of Higher Education All colleges operating in the state must be accredited by the board Superior Court Judge Philip Gruccio in his decision last week forbade

Mclntire from directly or indirectly advertising the college The temporary reprieve for the college came in the wake of another blow to the institution. The college was ordered to pay$400,000in back taxes and interest on the school building Nov. 13 by a state appeals court. Shelton College made a quiet return to the Cape Sept. 5. resuming classes in the campus it left in the early 1970s after a battle with the state over degree program accreditation. The college’s Cocoa Beach-Cipe Canaveral campus is reportedly still kept in use. according to . college source. The college can offer continuing education or non-degree courses until it receives its license but may not offer degree

programs, Rita Suarez of the State Board of Higher Education told the Lantern earlier. Mclntire's application for a license is currently stalled because "additional materials and licensing” is required for review of the

case.

Review of all school applications includes verification of application materials and an on-site tour of the facility, Suarez said. The Board meets several times a year to consider applications and a decision would probably be made in less than a year on the Shelton case. Shelton College originally began operations in Ringwood. New Jersey. The college moved to its Cape May Campus in 1964. then to Florida in the early

‘70’s.
