CAPE MAY - A public meeting here by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to outline details of a $25 million project to restore Cape Mayjbeaches will be held in early February, 1960. City Councilman Fred Coldren, who has been pushing for the project and had hoped for the public meeting to be held later this month, said he was notified of the delay by Corps Project Engineer Tim Blankenhom. ‘The hold up will not delay the start of construction nor any other aspedt Ihe beach restoration,” Coldren said. In context of more than 30 years of awaiting action on ‘the badly eroded beaches, a three month delay in a meeting is nothing to get concerned about, the Councilman added. The early February, 1960 date is necessitated by a Congressionally mandated 45-day period during which comments from interested persons and agencies can be received on the Phase I "General Design Memorandum” which is scheduled to be released later this month. Rec Bridge AVALON - Avalon recreational bridge wtnners for Nov. 9 were: lot, Alice Buch, 7500, 2nd Sterling Spielman, 7180, 3rd, Charley Redshaw, 6680.
"Although I haven’t seen it yet and am eagerly awaiting the opportunity to do so, I understand the Memorandum is two inches thick and is a very positive, optimistic and. creative proposal to restore the Cape May beachfront,” Coldren said. "I am convinced that Vie project is very defmatily still feasible, economically justified, and wiH become a reality, he addsd. The Memorandum contaihs the results of two years of planning, studies, research, appraisals, engineering and other activities to determine if the Federal investment to restore the Cape May beaches is cost effective and justified. Reportedly, the Corps's recomihendation to Congress is that the Cape May project is economically justified. Coldren is working with U.S. Rep. William J. Hughes to get the necessary $25 million included hi the Fiscal 1982 Public> Works appropriation and budget. The Councilman described the Congressman’s efforts in support of the project as "extremely cooperative, efficient, enthusiastic, and effective.” A threatened shake-up of the Philadelphia office of the Corps, plus delays in the review of the Memorandum in the New York Regional Office were
the two reasons cited for the three month delay is release of the Memorandum and scheduling of the public meeting here. Coldren said that once the Memorandum is released, Blankenhom and other Corps officials will visit Cape May informally to discuss the plan in advance of the formal February meeting.
