Since ’'freedom to devise your own style” has become the acceptable approach to art in our present century, there has been a breakdown in the skill of painting. Exhibitions contain mixed works ranging from tight to loose, from thoughtfully executed to slap dash. With the acceleration of contemporary life styles, it is natural that there be a step-up of the pacing of the production of a work of Art. As things come round there is now a backswing towards photo-realism and a tightening up of the craft. Methods other than direct painting are again
color this drawing. The drawing is set and tones with a thin glaze of red or yellow ochre which is brushed on and then wiped with a rag so that it is lean and transparent. This initial glaze or imprimatura, unifies all of the elements of the picture and pervades them with light. Tempera white is then used in hatching strokes to bring out highlights and to accentuate forms. The neutral composition of tempera allows it to sit in or on the underpainting in a stable way. But tempera is brittle and mttst be applied in short strokes or it will crumble *heri dry. (The

being tried and techniques used hundreds of years ago are being reworked with new materials. One such technique introduced in the 1500s by the Dutch painter Van Eyck presents the effect of vibrant colors oh well structured forms. The clarity achieved by this method depends on adherence to specific steps »with drying time in between. The contours of the subject are drawn with India ink or tempera black on the white canvas ground. The drawing must be accurate from the start, as successive stages of the painting will reinforce and
use of acrylic or alkyd paints with Uiis method eliminates thfirheed for caution in 6m respect as they have nWb flexibility. One drawbafe with them, however, is that they haven’t the organic richness of oil, but perhaps this is balanced by their ease of handling.) local color is applied over each particular area. This -glaze must be very thin, and may be applied with a soft brush or with the fingers. Since the glazes are so transparent, the black drawing of the contours works from within, shading the forms. Highlights may be brought out again with white and successive glazes of color employed until a right coloring is achieved. Additional accents may also be set in with black. Since pure colors are used for glazing, no admixtures, any
modifications of hue must be achieved through contrast, or superimposing colors. A purple, for example, would not be mixed, but would rather be the overlaying of red and blue. Further modifications could be achieved by tinting the underpainting with grey, green, etc. whiafa would ? influence tjw successive glazings. A painting developed in this systematic approach will be luminous in effect and well Worth the discipline put into its production.
Avalon Seniors Alone Pgm. Provides Security
AVALON - Elderly Avalon residents living alone will now be given the chance of getting daily telephone calls to check their health and welfare. The program, entitled Seniors Alone has been instituted by the Avalon Police Department, according to Police Chief
Joseph E. Foley.
By design the Seniors Alone program will have the seniors Call the police dispatcher before rMn each day. # Records of these calls 'till be kept on each person's card. Should there be no telephone call before noon, police will either call orvisitethe home to check
for any problems.
December l has been chosen for the kickoff date for this new program. Seniors who wish to be enrolled in this program are asked to register with the local police department. The officers in charge of this program are Ptl. John Focht and Ptl.
Steven Sykes.
Effective dates for this program will be Labor Day until Memorial Day, or when there aren’t neighbors around to care for
seniors in need.
The (Rpgram will link with othft- public service programs handled by the Avalon police department. These programs include the Crime Prevention Unit, Heater Light System Alert, and the Juvenile Aid
Program.
"We want Avalon citizens toavai! themselves of the programs that are provided for them by their local police department” said Chief Foley. ‘’We’ve asked Borough residents to allow an officer to check their homes for security problems. To date, very few have taken advantage of this program", the Chief noted, •it’s a shame more residents don’t have this service done, it may save them money and a lot of aggravation”, the Chief
said.
