Do you remember when there were oldtime vaudeville shows on the 108th St. amusement pier and Stone Harborites were treated to fireworks and Sunday evening concerts by the Hoxie Harmonica Biand and the United States Marine Band under the direction of John Gulbrandsen? Harry Martin remembers because he has lived in our town since 1922. His father, George Martin, was a carpenter and worked for Gus Miller, Sr. Later George was appointed postmaster of Stone Harbor and Harry worked in the post office for 14 years until World War II when he joined the service and became an Army mail clerk at Newport News. When the conflict was over Harry went into the construction business with his father and has been active in this phase ever since; his dad passed away several years ago. Sally Hald&nan Martin began vacationing in Stone Harbor when she was a little girl and has lived here year round since she and Harry were married in 1938. The Risley Brothers rah ads in the Philadelphia papers with special offers for one and two wa^b stays.;
in Stone Harbor during the summer and the Haldeman family decided to find out what was going on down here. By 1925 they had fallen in love with our Island (sandhills, mosquitoes, dusty roads, and the magnificent Atlantic Ocean) and Sally’s father built a cottage on 94th St. Harry Martin loves to keep busy. At one time he was active in 13 different organizations in Stone Harbor and vicinity. However, his greatest enjoyment is the volunteer fire department, and next year will mark his 50th year of service with Stone Harbor. He was secretary for 14 years, deputy chief and then chief for 19 years (1961 through 1970). At present he is Executive • Committeeman representing the fire companies of Cape May County to the New Jersey State Firemen's Association. This association is 102 years old. He also serves as secretary-treasurer of the Cape Mav County Firemen’s Aid Association. So when you hear that fire siren wail, be thankful that Stone Harbor has volunteers like Harry «•*«»• . . ■>.
