Town Team Tennis Action

I’ve been fishing for stripers since 1964. but Thanksgiving Day was the first time I've scored; and 1 just, can't help writing about it. When that 43 pound linesider stuck his head up on the port side of the '•Ron-EII." Ronnie Tompkins said my mouth fell wide open. We were drifting eels off Cape May Point when the big fellow took hold First, a couple of tape, and then one long tough pull and we were off to the races I've often said when I was fishing for channel bass at which I’ve also been pretty lucky, that I'd be able to tell which species gave the best fight. Now, since I’ve caught one of those lunker linesiders, I'm not so sure. It’s an entirely different kind of fishing and I really can't draw a comparison on it

When I was a little fellow knee-high to a grasshopper, my dad used to bring back stripers from the Strathmere Bridge and big ones he took on the Cold Spring jetty. I had always wanted to catch a big one, but waited 2S years for that day. Dad and "Chief" Farrow used to work minnows around the pilings of the old wooden bridge at Strathmere, and they caught more stripers in one season than I'llprobably catch in a lifetime, but at least I've finally scored. I used to envy John Cartabone, of Wildwood Crest, who was another “biggie" in the striper field. He ased to back up his skiff up to the rocks at the north end of the Cold Spring, Jetty and lie there steering with a stem tiller and throw bucktails and

hopkins lures into the white water, and he was a consistent scorer on striped bass. (Bob Hertzog said he used to fish there with him, too.) I've fished Long Beach Island beaches, Stone Harbor Point, Townsends Inlet, and under the Old Cape May Bridge; but the closest I ever came was to witness my brother-in-law Jim Heston hook a five pounder which Ernie gilled under the old wooden draw afCape May. ’ Now, after fll this dissertation, lets get down to some up-to-date news. On Friday after Thanksgiving the John Andruses of Millville had two stripers hooked in the "Rips." on their boat the ''Big Banana." John caught his fish but his wife lost her’s. I believe that John who gets out there •very day during the striper season, is probably our highest scorer this year, just as he was last year. There have been about 12 boats fishing the rips consistently and he is the most dedicated angler of them all. “Doc" Lummis on the "Fish b’ Fool” has spent a lot of lime there too and he has rfored frequently. Tfere isn't much talk on J tfieCB about striper fishing because most of these fellows use their VHF radios and they don't converse much over them either. Striper fishing is a lot like drum fishing: you have to concentrate on just that species, and you have to be patient. But I hope you don't wait 25 years to get one like I did! I took my striper to Steve Schofield who runs "Steve's Seafood" in the Villas. He weighed it and steaked it out for me. I’ll probably try to dean my next one, but I wanted an expert to cut this one up. We're going to have something new with those striper steaks at my house and I can’t wait to try this good eating fish. One last minute bit of news, Joe Peppi caught a 21-pound striper in the Rips on Saturday, the first, and all day Sunday Ron Tompkins, Bob Hertzog and I worked the rips but to no avail. However, Captain Tom Roberts and Tom Jorgensen stayed out a half hour longer than we did and hit paydirt. Tom caught a 21 pound linesider way out on the tip of Prissywick shoal. Jim Solley, who mates on the "Ogle HI," called and told me that on the same Saturday they caught a 12pound Cod about 15 miles out. That’s a promising sigh. One last item: Joe MacGregor upheld the legend of the Cape May Co.-Hatteras Anglers down on the outer Banks November 10 by hooking and landing a 46-pound channel bass in the surf off Avon. Jap’s boy'TImmle” also gor a 22-pound spot tail; and they caught a third red drum in the 18pound class. Thus our local anglers are in the news again in the "Graveyard of the Atlantic."

Avalon Real Estate entered the Nov. 27 Town Team Tennis fray at the Jersey Cape Racquet Club a prohibited favorite over the Whitebrier and for three and one-half events it appeared as though A.R.E. would indeed waltz through their opposition; but what started out as a cake walk quickly turned to a nailbiting clifflianger of a match and when all the smoke cleared, Avalon Real Estate could at last boast a hard fought 32-31 triumph. The Whitebrier got off to an early advantage in the men's singles division

the strong _ Ray Polipffwho downed an erratic Lyn Smith 8-2. Barbara Kerr narrowed Whitebrier's lead to four games with a hard fought 86 victory over Marion Gorelich. Avalon then stormed into the lead behind Bob Renza’s 8-0 whitewashing of Ed Evanchyk and Emil Gelenczei. Avalon’s Joyce Gould and June Moss brook then raced to a quick 6-1 lead over Gail Rocke and Donna Mazurek thus giving Avalon a comfortable 24-15 advantage, but it was here that the momentum suddenly turned as Rocke and

Mazurek stormed back to win seven straight games and so closed Avalon's lead to a mere two games going Into tfie mixed doubles finale. Avalon's team of Dave Kerr and Karen Wetherill faced off against the Whitebrier's veteran duo of crafty Stan Hollinger and Mary Soens. The two teams clawed at one another In a real thriller that kept the fans hootin’ and hollerin' till the final shot was made. In the end Hollinggr and Soens emerged the winners with a 9-8 (you guessed 5-4 in tne tiebreaker) victory:
