By J.A. Cunningham ’The Irish Tourist Board strikes again!" we said after a particularly infuriating search for a stone circle. (Actually, the Irish Tourist Board usually does an excellent job in assisting tourists and featuring the many attractions of [the country. Their book, "The Ireland Guide", is invaluable for those touring the country on their own. But with the sheer numbers of historical and scenic spots, it is only to be expected that there would be somedefidendes.) We had turned off a main road to a smaller one where a directional sign, ••STONE CIRCLE” pointed. (The stone circles are similar to those at Stonehenge in England, although smaller, and date from the pre-Christian era.) Our problem was that there were no more signs, even though we (kissed another intersection. As we learned we had to do in these situations, we stopped the next person we saw and asked, "Ah, the stone drcle you want? Tutu right at the next road, then left and follow the road to the top of the high
heel.”
We followed the directions, driving along a road which eventually became a narrow unpaved lane until we came to the top of the

'high heel'-spotting no stone circles. As we F _ driving down the other side, we met a fanner who tojd us we had passed them about a mile back near a gate. They may have been but they were not visible from the road, and we were not prepared to climb the wet and muddy fields to find them. We were determined to find a stone circle, and this was our second fruitless attempt. Hie Ireland Guide had mentioned one could be seen on one of their suggested tours of the KJIIarney area. Of course, they didn’t say where it was. and there were no signs to .mark! it. We stopped at a small store near where we thought It should be and gere first asked, "You wouldn’t be thinking of takjng any' souvenirs, now would you?" We reassured the storekeeper . and he pointed up the hill to where it was. When we reached it, we found we would have to walk across a field where a rather unfriendly bull was watching us. We decided to abandon that project. As we drove through a village called Loughrea in County Galway, the Ireland Guide there was a

stone circle near the town. Again, we asked for directions, as there were no signs marking it. We drove the mile out of town where we were told we would find it, and were not surprised that we didn’t. As we turned around to go backthere it was-hidden by the hedgerows. This one was an earthem circle, perhaps 4 feet high, and 40 feet in diameter. On the ring, and equidiatant from each other, were seven standing stones, about S feet high. (2 or S had been knocked down, but were still there.) In the center was a mound of earth covered by smaller stones. It is interesting to speculate - were these graves of ancient leaders? Were they religious symbols? Whatever they are, they are remarkable structures which turn your thoughts back over the centuries. TO BE CONTINUED
