One of the First Ladies of Stone Harbor is Mabel Potter. Her parents, Karolyn and John Larsen, were natives of Norway. They came to Stone Harbor in 1910, established a business, and raised a family here. George Potter, an enterprising young man, came to our town to work for Mr. Larsen and in 1916 married the boss’s daughter. During World War I he and Mabel worked in the Kittatiny Arsenal at Dover, N.J. Mabel tells me that they also put in two years service during World War 11 at Bellanka Aircraft in New Castle, Del., were Mabel turned out turrets. Mrs. Potter always was, and still is, a very active lady. She enjoyed portraying "Dolly" in the "Over Fifty Follies" when ' these highsteppere performed around town. On her more sedate side, she is past marton of Arbutus Chapter, was one of the pillars of the local PTA, ha's put in time as a volunteer at Etcetera Shop, and was organist and a Sunday School teacher for many years at Our Saviour Lutheran Church. She and

her sistei, Gladys Letzkus, are the oldest members of that congregation. Mabel has survived many Stone Harbor storms, but she says the Tide of 62 was the scariest because it came without warning. She was living in an upper floor apartment at the comer of 96th and Third, and when she awoke that morning in March all kinds of boats were floating down 96th Street. Her neighbor, Mildred Anderson, took refuge in Mabel's apartment, as did Florence Arenberg and many others. Florence’s daughter Ruth and her husband, Dr. John Lebeau, brought in a turkey and other ,goodies, so Mabel's Place was the place to be. There were three heavy tides before the waters subsided. Mrs. Potter has one child, Doris, who lives in Massachusette. and she is blessed with six grand children and five great grandchildren. George died in 1956. but Mabel stayed on in Stone Harbor. This has been ter home since she was a Tittle gifo and she would never want to live anywhere else!
