Sideline Shots By The OM Sport
The Old Sport wishes .to apologize to two valuable members of the 1947 Middle Township High Football Team who were inadvertently left out in the preceding articles on this great team. They are Bill Douglass and Tim Rush. Although not on the starting leant, they backed up their buddies and are certainly deserving of mention. "Blinky” Douglass did everything asked of him by the coach and “Tim the Thief” was a “Tough Little Guard,” according to one of the starters. Where are they now? Bill Douglass, after a varied career in the teaching profession, is now a respected member of the Science Department at Middle Township High School. He did a stint at Keyport, N.J. High School where he coached the basketball team and also worked as an official in high school games. He came back to Middle when the new high school was built and now is known as the "Jimmy Hoffa” of the Teachers Association. Timmy Rush operates the Tim Rush Farms Vegetable stand on Stone Harbor Blvd. in the summer. He is known as
“Tim the Thief" to Court House residents because of his high prices. He retreats to Florida after Labor Day and it is rumored that he is a tycoon down there in the Sunshine State. The Old Sport regrets overlooking these two fine men, but even his impeccable source, A1 Garrison, forgot to mention them. So a doff of the Old Sport’s fedora to Bill Douglass and Tim Rush!
Keith Seaman should have been with the Old Sport in Orlando for they are still playing softball With 800 Leagues going in Slo-Pilch competition, Orlando is the hotbed of soft. Would have loved to get to St. Peterburg to see the real old timers play softball. Yes, in the Sunshine City one has to be over 70 to play. The Old Sport will be eligible next year!!! In the Old Sport’s absence, the recreation department’s volleyball league continued in full swing by defeaUng the defending champions, Kiwanis, two games to one. Gene Sander’s State Farm team emerged as a real dark horse. Gene has some

real athletes on his team: Mike McLaughlin, Kevin Sherman, Butch Davies, et al. They should be in strong contention all season long. Recreation Director, Gregg Arnold has decided to go along with the six team league as started instead of adding two teams. But, they will be in the league when the second half starts in January. The Old Sport has not seen.them play, but Feed Tavern under the leadership of Mike Nicoletta, has some young chicks playing on the team. Now that football season is over, Donny Rhinesmith will be allowed to play his stellar game for the Kiwanis. Rhino is a real allaround athlete like his Dad, Big Don. Heard that the football team’s Saturday morning breakfast at the Middle Diner went off very well. Thanks are due John O’Dea, chairman of the Youth Activity Committee at Kiwanis and the genial hosts of the dinner, Clair Maries (Sophia Loren look alike) and smiling Fred Seymour for arranging the breakfast in a hurry. Maybe it will become, a regular thing before the games next season. Hope all my readers realize the honor that was paid to the Old Sport when he was selected by the Student Council to be Grand Marshall of the Homecoming Day game with Ocean. But what good is a grand Marshal without a parade? For the first time in 15 years there were no floats and no convertibles to ride in. At least they could have brought the Grand Marshall into the field in Chuck Doughterty's Corvette. But, no it was walk on time for the Old Sport and his wife Dorothy. But, he did get to kiss the Homecoming Queen and her court at the dance Friday night. Shame to waste those kisses on a Senile Citizen!
