Taking into account the advance hype, the number of hours to record and the final cost. The Eagles’ “The Long Run" (Asylum) has to be regarded as a letdown. It’s not that the group isn't talented, but that they seem to be going through the motions. “The Long Run" is a cold album, whereas even when their early Material was weak it had passion. For the time being, though. The Eagles have little to worry about. This record will go to the top of the charts and their legion of hard-core fans will cherish It. But, unless they loosen up a bit,the future remains in question. After all, even fanatics lose their patience when they stop being entertained. On the other hand. I $3.2 Million USCG Housing Contract Given CAPE MAY - A $3,248,000 construction contract has been awarded for family housing on the U S. Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May. Martell Construction Company was awarded the contract Dec. 7. The Penns Grove, N.J. firm will begin work on the project in 45 days. The family housing project includes demolition of 24 existing substandard units now located on the site. Completion of 41 units is expected within one year. The three and fourbedroom homes will be gas heated and equipped with solar collectors for domestic hot water.

never had much faith ir J.D. Souther as a performer. He’s written some fine songs, but other people always did them better than he did. And, being part of The Eagles' clique, his records were always overshadowed by the accomplishments of his peers, "You’re Only Lonely” (Columbia) is a fine record. Souther has a loose, pleasant approach to his folk influenced pop tunes and his band offers a sparse, yet consistent backing. Ihe title track is already a hit, and it seems as if J.D. Souther has, at long last, come of age as a performer. Like most soul artists from the sixties, Wilson Pickett has suffered in the age of disco. His new album on EMI is half a successful comeback. While he’s in fine voice, sounding raw and powerful, his songs are, generally speaking, weak. It's nice to hear he still has the chops to perform with the best, but disheartening to realize all his hard work will be in vain, until he gets better material. Fans of disco and sci-fi movie soundtracks will want to pick up Neil Nbrman’s "Greatest Science Fiction Hits" (GNP Crescendo). Neil, whose first album was a neglected masterpiece, has taken theme songs, such as "Moorraker," "Alien," and "Space 1999," and added a disco beat. Personally, I wish he would have continued to explore the experimental ground he covered with his debut album, instead of doing this record, but Neil Norman has certainly accomplished what he set out to do.
