•CUM AMD BAY SOVNDINOS By Boyd Tyl«r

This is the time of the veer when I like to take a look backward and recall the successes and the shortcomings of our fishing

I can't say that 197fl was one of our best angling years, but I can recall some that were worse. For me, it was a sad year because I lost my Boat partner, and long time friend, Elmer W. Higgins Jr. of the Villas, and also one of my old time fishing buddies, Wayne Fraley, of Wilmington, Delaware. But what I’m dealing with here is the overall picture of what happened to all of the angling people in 1979. Cod season turned out to be a disaster - very few Cod were taken - in fact, I believe that this is the first season (hat the charter boats did not go out after those cold water fish, because they turned out to be so scarce that no one thought it was worth while. Mackerel made an relatively unheard of showing the day before Christinas 1978, and then came along a little later on in January and were taken in quanitity up until April. In fact, they started off our season for both the charter boats, and the private fishermen. Right after the mackerel started to drop off drum season started. This was a drum season that win be remembered because of its foggy nights. Meet of the evenings started off in a haze that deepened into a blanket of fog as the blackness deepened. This condition had its effect on the overall catches, and quantities of catches were down from 1978. We did

have quite a few Drum contests, and this produced an effect that offset the low numbers. Big Tide runner weakfish appeared with the drum, and some new records were set on these troutlike fish. Here again the numbers were down, but their staying qualities were unheard of. We were still catching tiderunners In the Ocean in July, and although It had not been heard of before, we found them drifting after dark Inside of McCries shoal in the early summer. 1979 saw the birth of some new charterboats, and some new charter Captains. Donald and Davis Roseman got their Captain's licenses, and at the end of the year Paul Hoffman qualified too. The "Bivo” put in a full season under Captain Steve Rea, as did the "Sea Star" under Captain Bob Schumann. We also had the new "Big Jim 11" under Capt. A1 Del inski, and the New "Thunderbird” with Captain Bob Hitchner; plus the "Island Queen" Captained by George Gadsby. But back to the 1979 fishing. Bhiefish did just about what was expected of them, and they were the "Bread and butter" items for most of the charter fleet. Blues up to 14 pounds were taken in quanity until they almost wore out their welcome. Blue fin Tuna siart ^if disippointed us, because they never did show in quantity, and white marlin were in the Canyon to a limited extent. But the fbe! shortage and the price . of it when it was available made it hard to determine

whether the bill fish were there or not. Big Eye Tuna and Yellow Fln« showed in unbelieveable quantities and size - The White Marlin tournament of South Jersey Hunting and fishing Center burned into Tuna heaven with Dick Zane, of Swedesboro, leading the pack with a 315^ pounder Tuna were all over Cape Island Marina’s dock during this affair, and they continued to be taken for two solid weeks after this affair - Swordfish weren’t quite as plentiful as last year, but Captain Jim LummtVs catch of 12 at one time electrified the night time fishing world. The Inn shark fishing chib had one of their greatest years. More sharks were taken this season than at any time since the chib has been In existence. Andy Barber, of Villas, was top man with a 249 pound blue shark. This type of fishing is gaining popularity every year. At the end of the year Stripers were showing very well in the Rips off Cape May Point, and on the Jetties. Moat of them were taken on live eels, but 1 have heard of some catches on umbrella rigs. Thanksgiving I got my first big striper ever • a 43 pounder - so I won’t forget 1979 fishing with Ron Tompkins on the "Ron EU”. All in aU 1979 was not as great as 1978, but it was a good year. Next week I intend to look into the crystal ball, and see what 1980 holds '
