COURT HOUSE - Cai May County will soon tak fits show on the road in its earliest efforts to attract .tourists to the area for the summer of 1980 With the sharp experiences of last summer’s gas lines, abundant room vacancies and uncrowded beaches still fresh in county businessmen’s minds, county tourism officers are more anxious than ever to kick off the promotional season as early as possible "We're going to try to offset any crisis we may have next year.” Richard Longstreet. tourism representative with the county Department of Public Affairs, said last week. Though it is too early to gauge the public's vacation mood and impossible to foretell such variables as gas availability and weather, the Department of Public Affairs nonetheless plans to be ready with a new strategy "We re going to promote the local people, more so." liOngstreet said Local people" includes potential vacationers from Montreal to Washington. The main thrust of tlm promotion is to cultivate the "less than a tank of gas" market One method of promoting the local market is by. participating in promotional shows at area shopping malls. A tried-and-truc scheme, the mall shows can reach a potential market of 200.000 persons in some cases. Longstreet said. The publicist sets up a booth at the mall shows equipped with 80-100 varieties of Cape May County tourism literature each year. Literature for the 1980 Public Affairs Travel Show program is currently being collected from individual businesses and municipalities, according to county freeholder Anthony T Catanoso. director of the Department of Public Affairs The show schedule will spearhead a campaign in the Delaware Valley area this year as well as the traditional areas of promotion.
