Well, here goes for a look into the crystal ball for fishing chances in 1980 I must first temper my look into the future with some realistic thoughts. Our angling, in the coming year, will definitely be affected by our fuel supply, and theenstof it. Just as 1979 was affected, I feel that this year will be influenced by how much fuel we Ifave. and how much it cost The first species that .should show here on the Jersey Cape is Boston mackerel, and I wouldn't be surprised if news of a catch beats this column to publication I look for catches of mackerel to be good right through January. Feburary, March, and fwrl of April, I don't expect much in the way of catches of Cod, and I'fn at'a loss to explain why, except for the fact that the water temperature is-stlll high, and they may be passing us way offshore. I look for the big blues to show up in early April, and chase those Bostons away. I don't look for any falling off in the slammer population; in fact I think they will be present this season in even greater quantity. I look for big tiderunner woaKfish to show up about mid-April, but I don't think any amount will be taken until late April when the fellows start trying for Black Drum (the anglers up North of us could upset this theory, because they study the hig weakies movements, and they may try for them in quantity in 19801 1 The big humpbacks will Ik* a little later Ihis year with the first one on hobk and line being taken about April 30th, but they'll hang around longer, and more will be taken, because the weather will he better. The first school of Drum will show way up the Bay around Bug light, and will stay there for quite awhile - then they'll move down the Bay in the vicinity of 14 foot light and the pin-top buoy North of Brandywine light. Flounder will be more plentiful this next season as they are on an upswing in their cycle, and more will be taken in the back sounds as more anglers start to go shorter distances for their fishing pleasure. Offshore in the canyons I look for white and blue marlin to be in good supply, but there will be a decrease in canyon fishing because of costs BIi* fin Tuna should make a comeback, and the first of these school size fish should be taken about the first week in July off near five fathom monster buoy Another species will show well out past the 35 fathom line will be Yellow fin Tuna and Big Eye Tuna there will be even more big fellows taken this year, because now* our fleets are rigging heavy for them I also look for large bull dolphin and lady dolphin to make an appearance out in the deep hole, and I expect some real trophy fish to be taken. One species that is going to surprise this s«Bon is kingfish. I feel they, are going to return in some of their old spots, as the
bottom of their cycle has been reached. The fish of the year could very well be the Croaker, as I look for a return of those good eating fish in a lot better quantity then in 1979 Swordfish are very hard to foresee - there's no doubt that they will be available, but its still hard to predict just how many ,fellows will go out there night fishing in this fuel less economy. About the first of the fall season 1 look for some good catches of Stripers in the ripsandoff the jetties. I believe we ll see more surf fishing in 1980 as more anglers forsake boat fishing in favor of a more inexpensive sport. Don't get me wrong on these bleak outlooks -1 feel our waterways will still be cfowded, but it's my opinion that the fuel shortage and cost will eat away at our motor boat fleet, aixl our party boats. Just as 1979 became the year of the contests, 1980 will surpass it as more and more money contests develop here on our Jersey Cape. I can't say that this is exactly the way I'd like to see it go. but who can buck a trend? Our Jersey Cape llill still be the best place to fish in the next season and I. for one, count myself blessed to be Ifving here. Newer patterns of fishing will develop, with some new strides towards lure fishing for billfish in I98(/. But the old tried and true methods w ill still catch the majority of the fish. I don't see any change in the inshore fishing picture.

because of pollution, which is still prevalent in the Bay and the Ocean because of outfall lines But offshore fishing will 6e better ill 1980 I've jusl about run out cf space, so the,, fish I've missed. I ll cover later. lx?! me wish you ;ind yours a 1980 filled vjth good fishing and gi*>d health f l.ast minute news flash - I have spoken lately aboti,' the early sailfish runs off of Florida - John Osborne was telling me in church that olin YYoolson got a sail and a wah(M> on Jules Kevin's boat December 20th.
