PAINTING 4 from the grQ-u.ri.c3- ^ 'c/teryt Crtui$
News of a forthcoming exhibit at NYU, has . prompted the creation of a painting and a confrontation for the artist of its unique set of obstacles and discoveries. There is one limitation set by this Small Works Exhibit: the picture size, including fr|me. must not exceed The size restriction creates a new set of circumstances, for what might work for a larger piece may not be successful on a smaller scale. The initial reaction was to crowd a multitude of details within the tiny framework, such as the landscape of Bruegal which include scores of one-inch people rendered down to their buttons and expressions. The idea of a busy little painting, however, seemed charming but borjng and so was released along with other passing thoughts until the impact of a vision struck the mind's eye. The vision which made its mark
contains three basic elements: figures, reflective^ surface, and light source. The subject matter selected, the next problem to deal with is the composition. In order to comprehend the possibilities inherent within the relationship of three points, consider the infinite variations of a triangle. Model, light, and mirror were arranged and re-arranged while thumbnail sketches were developed until a workable design was selected. When creating a painting. one must consider not only the elements within, but also their relationship to the entire picture surface, in this instance the confines of a rectangle. 8"x9 , 2 m . The geometric shapes of the tube-type florescent lamp and the square mirror are stable as compared with the flexibility of human form. The'body can be twisted, an arm bent or extended, the head tilted until the figure

achieves dram? and interest. It was decided that the figure, light from the front would be viewed from the rear, jjreatintf the effect of a silhouette- The mirror would act as a device to reveal the illuminated face turned away from the viewer. As the darks and lights were placed in the sketch the totality of the entire design became apparent; 3 elements became one picture. Next, the painting surface was prepared by mounting a piece of canvas onto cardboard and gessoed until a fairly smooth texture was achieved. This was to be my first Experience with alkyd paints which are based on a synthetic resin, soluble with turpentine, and containing the preferred qualities of both oils and actrylics The effect sought in this instance is the luminousity of direct light which calls for rich color; rather than plunging in directly with the hues, the entire painting was "drawn" with tones of gray to be glazed with pure colors (This permits one to deal with the brganization of values separately from color mixing.) As the objects were developed, so was the background, neutralized to set off the subject. As the colors were applied in thin glazes, certain areas away from the light source were subdued in order that the coirs near the light, could sound with a dramatic chord by contrast, Because of the transparency of the glazes, the painting holds together due to the unity of the drawing beneath the surface. As I describe the M.O. for this piece. I must mention how the scale affects the procedure. As earlier noted, one has a tendency to reach for a tiny brushwhen working small My policy here was to work with the largest brush possible to avoid niggling details which can detract from the overall impact. The woman in this painting is applying mascara which is a precise act. Rather than show every eyelash. I depicted instead the gesture which must he refined in order to be "read" in an instant A small painting does not mean a limited conception or a minor effort Am.
