1900 hovered, glaring as a fresh white canvas. The work of 1979. tucked away in portfolies, tacked on the walls, staked in piles flanking the studio, bear the marks of experience outdated by a number change. Unfinished canvases are turned to the wall, hanging about until enough is learned for them to be resolved Some are even complete in the mind’s eye, but to reveve interests not always easy nor as exciting as the adventure of a sparkling new surface. And so the first confrontation of the decade begins for this artist. One mast decide what to leave behind, what to hang onto and where to begin. Kay Dougherty has said that the direction evolves • from the artist, that one cannot all of a sudden work in a brand new way. I was reminded of tha* when I stopped by his studio on the last day of the year. Ray was working on one of his free-form calligraphic pieces as a refresher after the completion of a formal
and highly polished painting. Though the two approaches seem to be vastly dissimilar. they are nonetheless created by the same mind, eye, and hand, and what’s learned in one spills over into the other. They might be seen a$ extensions of a range. It is not only the technique which marks an artist's style, but also the root motivations, which direct seeing and the reorganization of that seen through the process of painting. At this point, for example, it would not be possible for Ray to paint bananas, or moonrise over McDbnald’s. for he is looking elsewhere. His latest piece, "Icon”, which so acutely impressed *ne, is the presentation of symbols which appear and dissolve farming interlocking pranes of color within the framework of a pentagon. After seeing this painting which holds so much power and purpose, I could not help but question my own efforts

And so while stretching the first canvas of the new year, I thought of what I should paint and why; oh, that it could be exalted and inspiring and constructive to the human spirit! My depths and heights were scoured for the image. I paced about. The respite that comes with nightfall was hours away. It was one in the afternoon, the sun beginning to stream through the south > Births MELANIE ROSS COLLINS, bom to John and Bonnie Collin*. 881 DmninriDeRd. CM CM. 12/13. windows, crashing against surfaces. An image was framed by a doorway. Familiar things were transformed by the moment into an exotic scene. When the view point is changed ever so slightly, the mundane becomes a revelation. Interest in contriving a picture is here overwhelmed by the desire to record what is witnessed The easel is set up, the first markings made with charcoal, and the artist waits for the light to return.
