I sometimes write a column at this time of the year with a general look at many of the environmental problems here on our Cape of Nature One time I made a New Years resolution not to write about Conservation topics, but I have changed in that respect my' resolution this year is to write many articles on problems that arise from misuse of our environment. I've long been against ocean outfalls, and I still am. I don’t blame the township and borough officials that are getting up in arms towards our Cape May County M.U.A. in their approach toward still using landfills, and these drainage pipes into our Ocean and Bay. This summer I heard of' a process which could do away with these enemies to our land and#sea. and I can’t understand why there hasn’t been any research into this field, in light of all the money that has been spent. I’m talking about a process that is now installed in the Crest Haven Complex, which turns up solid waste, and will successfully produce steam for the furnaces that now use oil or natural gas. < It is also cleared on the air pollution part. too). Why hasn't this process been investigated by the M.U:A. as an answer to our sewage problems here on the Jersey Cape?. We’ve long known that a trench parallel to our parkway could have raw sewage and liquids dumped into it, and areated with oxygen so that it would settle harmlessly into our meadows; and that this treatment would work, but thqt hasn’t been investigated either; and again I ask WHY?? Another disturbing factor has been the Bidwells Creek jetty. It is finally being lengthened to the 1000 foot mark where it was supposed to originally be. but now its doubtful whether the scheme will work unless they ‘put a North Jetty opposite the new one. as shoaling may still occur even with the S^new groin. Why has this \ taken so long’’ What steps are being taken to prepare for this Northern extension? Still another problem is the shoaling of our inlets, and even though we’ve spent untold dollars moving sand from one place to another in these inlets, they are still shoaling up because of tidal action. When are the responsible officials going to make the Army Corps of Engineers put their dredge spoils on land so this shoaling won't occur?? I could go into the oil crisis, but I believe the problems there are obvious to everyone by now. and I’m hoping we get an alternate form of energy in 1980 that will do away with our dependence on crude oil Our immediate danger overshadows this anyway as six Iranian tankers lie. fully loaded, over in the anchorage because no one will handle these cargos. Why doesn't our Government seize these vessels, and make them be an-

chored back of the Harbor of Refuge in Lewes? Government agencies should also relieve the crews until an agreement is reached in the Iranian crisis. I knowSthe answers to these questibns is not very easy, but in future months I intend to explore them in depth to see what we can do to remedy these situations. In the meantime I want to tell you about a new organization which might bring us help. Its called the National Coalition of Marine Conservation, and it has a cross section of famous conservationists on its board, among them Henry "HaI" Lyman, of Boston. Mass.. John Rybovich Jr. of West Palm Beach. Fla.; and Frank J. Mather III, of Woods Hole. Mass .I believe they could help us with our problems if only our powers that we wduld contact them and ask for assistance. The Cousteau Society will also be big on assistance in 1980, as will the International Game Fish Association. But I do believe the answer is to get rid of our apathy, and make use of the organizations that are available to us. One other item that will have to be watched very closely this year is the Salt Water Fishing license. It is not a dead issue, and I Cape Coin Club Plans Meet •WILDWOOD-CAPE COIN CLUB will hold (heir regular monthly meeting. Sunday. Jjibuary i:i. at 2. at the Wildwood Recreation Center. 24:1 E. Rio Grande Ave . Wildwood. 2nd floor. Ityreshments will be served. Doors will be open at 12 :11) The public is cordially invited to attend Many thanks for your kind consideration and best wishes lor a Happy and Sueces. ,111980

believe a further attempt to get it passed will be made in 1980.1 hope to have some advance notice on when this is going to happen, so. hang in there, and keep reading these columns. Already we have had to face increased fresh water fishing fees. Trapping fees have been raised, and the new gunning fee is also higher than last year. So there is no reason to believb that the Salt Water Fishing license proponents will stop their drives. We stopped them last year, but jts no time to drop our guard.
