By Bill Sherman The Old Sport haa had a taate of’girls' basketball and it left a bad taste in his mouth He Was present at the Kiwanis Christmas Girls' Basketball Tour nament • He was led to believe that this would be one of the best tournaments in South Jersey Well, if this was a good ‘ tournament, the Old Sporty would hate to see an ordinary one Power houses like Atlantic City, Pleasant ville, Vineland, Oakcrest, Absegami, Lower Cape May and Wildwood Catholic would be playing with Middle Township the host team The first six games were the most one stded contests this observer hasevefseen ATLANTIC CITY beat Wildwood Catholic, Pleasantville beat Oak crest, Middle Twp beat Absegami and Vineland beat Lower Cape all by at least 20 points difference Well, ndw we're down to

the four powerful teams. But Atlantic City blew ncMantville off the court Tnd Middle Twp overwhelmed Vineland Now, we would see a great game — Atlantic City vs. Middle to determine the champion. But what happened? Middle came up with a game plan designed not to win the game but to hold the score down on Atlantic City Playing possession ball in the very first quarter, the great Panther varsity scored only two points. WASN'T THAT thrilling. Sue McKinley — who had scored 34 points the game before to set a new school record — didn't even score a point. And Middle looked great holding the ball so Atlantic City couldn't fast break well. The Old Sport always thought the object of the game was to put the ball in the basket, but Coach Penman wouldn't let his plkyers try to do that. HIGH SCORERS Laurie Budd and Sue McKinley,

averaging 20 and 19 points a game, wound up with eight points each after the coach let them go in the second half. The final score must have satisfied Coach Penman. Atlantic City 40, Middle Twp 32. He had held the Vikings under 10 points! Is this the best of girls basketball? And then there were consolation games. The losers were playing to determine third, fourth and fifth places. On Friday afternoon, four losers played to empty bleachers. Even their own people didn’t bother to come to the games. The Old Sport understands that next year the field will We cut to six

teams and maybe they can get Ocean City in it. That would help. But the Old Sport saw all the girls' games and had to miss the boys’ tournament at Wildwood Catholic where the Panthers struggled to win the fourth place. ••• TURNING TO volleyball, the league-leading State Farm Team showed some fine sportsmanship on a recent Thursday when, due to a scheduling error, the Kiwanis had to play a 7 o’clock game when that is the time of their regular weekly club meeting. When recreation director George Arnold tried to reschedule the game to a later time, he was told by the fine sports min who represented State Farm that it was too short a notice for him to inform his six players of the proposed change in time, and that State Farm would be on the Neil’s Sizzles In Tennis COURT HOUSE - Neil's Restaurant overcame a game but out-manned First Eastern squad to come away with a 37-21 victory in Jan. 8 Tbwn Team Tennis action. The margin of victory would have been wider still had Neil’s not been forced to default one of its matches due to a shortage of men on the team. In men’s singles, Lee Jones representing Neil’s routed Phil Kelly by an 8-2 count. Cathy Smith cushioned I'Jeil’s lead with a hotly contested 9-7 victory over First Eastern's Carol Yarborough. Jones then teamed up with Bob Heldom to score an impressive 8-2 triumph over Eastern's Tony Ferrante and Terry Shields. In women’s doubles play, Neil's team of Jackie Smith and Merc Bauman proved too strong for Beverly Shields and Babs DeFrancisco in posting an 8-4 win. The evening's final match featured Cap. Roni Zane and Jake Williams of Neil's, blasting First Eastern's mixed duo of Barbara Roff and Bob Young by a score of 8-0. Neil's, moved to a threeway tie for first by upping its record to 3-1. court at 7 and if Kiwanis couldn’t make it, they would have to forfeit the match. Thanks a lot, State Farm, you are now classed with the Optimists, who would rather win a game by forfeit than play it on the court. ••• The Old Sport intended to take in the wrestling match against Lower Cape May Regional, but the snowstorm put the kibosh on that.
