Dan Hicks At Merchant Academy This ih the Mrtmd in a seric* of -artii-lr* about Middlr Towmhip High School gradiwlps who have made Hood inrnllrfte Dan Hicks is a resident of ,Stone Harbor who '‘graduated last June and is now in his first year at the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point. NY His parents are Jennifer and Orton Hicks, a 1949 graduate of Dartmouth College Dan has two brothers. Orton and Robert; the former a freshman at MTHS. the latter attends Stone Harbor Elementary. At Middle. Dan was on the Honor Roll from in his junior year. In sports he was an outstanding tennis player, and played soccer for three years as well. In tennis he played in his junior and senior years He has a record of 12-1 in his last year and 9-4 as a junior He was in the top seven in the C.A.L. and was actually picked as the number one player by the coaches AT THE Merchant Marine Academy he is majoring in engineering Courses he will be* taking after the first two quarters • include calculus, physics and chemistry His participation in sports is limited because of his academic courses However, he has played some soccer He also took part in a tennis tournament for the freshmen and made the finals and is assured of being on the team this spring He is interested In sailing, and the academy has one of the best sailing teams in the country 1 . He will he going to sea for five months starting next July During his sophomore and junior years, he will spend two quarters at sea. Dan's Hobbies includes coin collecting THE MERCHANT Marine Academy is in Kings Point. Long Island Dan had hopes of going to the Naval Academy, but received word from Congressman Hughes that he would be appointed to the Merchant Marine Academy Although he was disappointed at first, he is now satisfied and actually glad he did it He will not have as much military regimen And will become a civilian working on merchant ships, after graduation. Then he will only be at sea six months a year Sounds like a good career
