The Basketball season. with the exception of the high school teams, has gotten off to a slow start The Kiwanis team has yet to play a game and nothing has been heard from Billy Mulligan s Collegians. Also the Hornets of Court House were to play a team of Coast Guardsmen, and St. Ann's of Wildwood. Maybe it’s due to the lack of gyms for the teams to use The Kiwanis has had to shift from the middle school gym. And although the Lockwood Center at the 4-H Building is set up for volleyball, it is difficult for adults to play a game of basketball on the concrete floor. Hard on the old legs! The--Middle Township Recreation Dept. Volleyball league finished the first half of the season with State Farm in number one position. Kiw'anis in second. Acme in third and Optimists in fourth These four teams will now play a double elimination tournament to determine the w inner Two losses and the team is out. State Farm is heavily favored to win.. although the Optimists could be a dark horse They finished up strong, taking three games from Kiwanis. THE OLD SPORT HOPES THAT THE LeRoy May Recreation Center will not become a "white elephant" During the Christmas Holidays it was hardly ever open for the kids who were home from school. The fine equipment in the center, ping-pong table, pool table and air hockey game, should be available to our youth. The ftyg football season is also proving to be a dud! Despite unseasonably Octave on T.V. WILDWOOD - A color video-tape of last Sunday's Churclf Unity Octave program at St. Ann’s Church with Bishop James Schad will be shown this evening (Wednesday at 8), tomorrow night at 7 and Sunday afternoon at 1 over Channel 2.

warm weather in December, only two games have been played this year between the Cowboys and the Sea Hawks (formerly the Raiden). The Cowboys unfortunately lost their coach and have had difficulty getting together with a new one Too bad. for coach Mark Robbins has a fine team this year. They beat the Cowboys handily in the two games they played. Outstanding for’ the Sea Hawks are Cpt. Keith Maund. Joe Fulford. Rich Startare, Richie Schneeman. John McCann. Brian Maund. Steve Maund. Teddy Marriner. Joe Peterson. Bob Parks. Butch Eckert and John Baldashri. IF THE weather stays i mild a series between then Sea Hawks and the ' Cowboys will be played for the championship of Middle Township, either best 2 out of 3. or 3 out of 5. depending on the weather Signs of spring coach Chuck Dougherty of the Middle Township High School Baseball Team has his net for batting practice hung up in the "C" Gym and expects to be using it nights until he can get outside. Even though official practice can't start until Mar I, the boys can work out on their own Among the Panthers who will be back this year are "J.C " Collins. Art Cannon. Joho McCray. Rick Stout. Gary Hunter. Neal Chase and Jimmy Killian V.I.P.’s on hand for the Wildwood Basketball game were board members Jack Hand and Jane. Ben Weimer. George Tanner, Mr and Mrs. Spaulding, parents of Dawson. Gil and Carolyn Simmerman. John Roberson. Rick Harmon, (with leg in a cast) his mother. Charlotte Harmon, and faithful fan Ruth Douglass For Wildwood there was Mike Coront the new athletic director. COURT HOUSE - Mayor Sam DeVico is hopeful that Middle Township Committeewoman Pat Peterson can give the township recreation program what is perceived as needed new direction and dimension within the next three

months

On Jan. 8 Township Committee abolished the three-member recreation commisaion Their unanimous action came at Mrs. Peterson's behest following what she considered lack of positive action and lack of communication on the part of the commission. In a telephone interview from his home here Sunday . night, the mayor told the County Herald he is "sure" Mrs. Peterson can develop *new programs and make ■hem move. ™ "But if we do not.’’ he continued, "if she cannot make this recreation department move and function and start getting a positive direction with policy and programs, then we will have to establish another course of action '' THAT COULD m<?an reestablishing a recreation commission. Mr. DeVico said, indicating that even if that became necessary, it wouldn't include the same fhree individuals "It will have to be some other source that can af ford itself the time and have the expertise with regard to the problems, and create programs that we have to have. They have to address what the problems are and have to come up with some positive direction And we hadn't received that so far " The commissioners "weren't developing recreation rapidly enough for the entire township.'' the mayor said, acknowledging there may have been some justifiable reasons for the alleged slowness of action "I do not know, but at least she (Mrs Peterson) was not satisfied. There was one aspect of the township committee recreation commission encounter with which the

"Each time a delay would come back, they would blame us and say it’s the township fathers' fault for not doing this, that or the other But they “had the green light and thev had the money. I don't know what tyoy were waiting for The' three commissioners. chairman Carl Baker. Gene Calhoun and l/w Luteri. responded via a five-page statement addressed to township tax payers in which they asserted it was unwise to leave control of a $100,000 recreation budget up to the "will and whims of one individual." especially when recreation in Middle Township "is in its infancy stages " ACCORDING TO their statement, policy guidance from the governing body was never forthcoming, due in pari trt Com mitteewoman Petersons absence from "several meetings." They also alleged that it was their rejection of a request to fire the Whitesboro Rec director that began "our problems' with Mrs Peterson THE FORMER com gpiiHSioners also took ex ception to allegations they hadn't made plans or progress responding that, through the roe director, they had im plemented programs for seniors and youngsters including .various arts programs in addition to sports activities Baker. Calhoun and I,uteri also stated that a year ago they had discussed with Com mitteewoman Peterson a five-year recreation program for developing the Goshen Road tract which included a one-year program utilizing 15 acres for newballfields
