State Beefing Up Tourist Promotion

TRENTON - The national travel industry now views Garden State as a major destination for tourists, according to N.J. Labor and Industry Commissioner John Horn. A delegation of representatives from his department and the state's

tourism industry were very well received at the recent annual meeting of the National Tour Brokers Association in Orlando. Fla., the commissioner said in a news release. "Many tours have operated in the past by traveling through New

Jersey on their way to other destinations." Horn explained. "But because of the efforts of New Jersey representatives, we now are likely to find more of these operators visiting New Jersey sites, eating in New Jersey restaurants, and using New Jersey lodgings." Horn also reported the issuance of the first New Jersey travel sales guide at the convention, attended by more than 200 national tour brokers. CAPE MAY - For the fifth consecutive year the Cape May-Lewes Ferry has showed a profit in its previous 12 months of operation, according to William Miller Jr . director of the Delaware River & Bay Authority. Although ferry traffic showed a decrease of four percent, a toll increase initiated last September helped to boost revenues by $129,000 or about five percent over the equivalent 12 months of 1978. Authority chairman Garrett Lyons said that in the face of declining toll revenues nationally, the ferry staff and manager Theodore Bright were to be congratulated for keeping the ferry in the black five years in a row. During its January meeting, the Authority also approved the director's recommendation that design services be initiated for the additional work that will be required in the North Cape May terminal area upon delivery of the new ferry vessel.
