Consumer Energy Conference Slated Next Month by Hughes
WASHINGTON - Congressman Bill Hughes is organizing another energy conference and exhibition for consumers, this one in Atlantic City on the weekend of February 23 and 24. Hughes, who sponsored a similar conference in January 1978, said the latest round of OPEC price increases, coupled with growing instability in the Middle East, make it more essential than ever for Americans to get first-hand information on alternative energy forms and conservation measures. The 1978 conference drew some 16,000 people over a two-day period. The latest energy conference will be patterned after the first one and will feature displays by manufacturers and government agencies, distinguished speakers, and audio-visual presentations. It will be open to the public free-of-charge, at the Sheraton Deauville Hotel in Atlantic City. "In 1978 the public was ready to learn more about solar energy, conservation and alternative energy forms,” Hughes said in a news release. "Today, with rising energy prices and improved government incentives, I think the public is ready to take action." The two-day conference, he explained, will provide a host of literature and
practical information on the uses of solar heating and hot water systems, as well as manufacturers’ displays of specific equipment and technology. Other energy materials will be featured as well, including wood burning stoves, weatherization windmills, solar-electric and others. According, to the Ocean City lawmaker, complementing the actual displays of equipment will be a long list of distinguished experts on alternative energy, as well as those equipped to give citizens practical first-hand advice on their specific needs. Beyond conventional solar and other energy technologies, the speakers and displays will also concentrate on more futuristic alternative energy forms that are only now under development. "Government programs and initiatives from private industry can only do so much," Hughes emphasized. "After that, public involvement and participation is essential if we are to get these new and promising energy alternatives into widespread use and application. "This conference is intended to give the public the knowledge and tools they will need to make individual decisions on energy alternatives," Hughes concluded.
