A Tale Of Two Sand Dunes

(From Page l)v at established dune revealing snow fence installed many years ago Without the snow fence, serious property damage would have occurred long ago. This fact is cited by the borough in pointing up the need to protect the dunes through periodic stabilization projects and constant maintenance. Previous dune stabilization projects have been done exclusively by volunteers (children and adults aware of the dune's importance to the community). ''This project complimented the existing High Dune stabilization started in Avalon in 1968r' Mayor Ellsworth Armacost explained. "It is a tribute to the hard of chairman Yvonne Ballenger and the entire Environmental Commission for their long hours of labor and also to the borough residents who have served in many ways over the past 10 years on this program." IN WEST CAPE MAY. Mayor Vasser only wishes he too could be so complimentary. According to Mayor Vasser. 1974 was the last time Lower Township took an active part in rebuilding the eroded sand dune along South Cape May. That participation consisted of sending in equipment to push up the breached dune. "Since that time we haven't been able to get any cooperation whatsoever,” the borough official said of his township counterparts. "Although the (Army Corps did say the last time they repaired the dune, it was the jurisdiction of the municipality to maintain it. But that was never done."

Mr. Vasser has also been after Cape May City officials to alleviate the flooding in the meadow once it occurs by reopening Cape Island Creek to the maximum extent possible. The creek which drains the meadow, had been blocked for years by debris dumped at its mouth by the County Mosquito Commission and by the collapse of the old metal pipe which was installed when the creek was filled in decades ago under a government-funded project within the city. THE CITY has reopened the pipe to some degree and last year included further reopening in its application for federal funding. Mr. Vasser reports that Cape May City Manager Fred Coldreh has also offered the assistance of city workers on a volunteer basis to push sand up along the eroded dune. Mr. Coldren first wanted to check with township officials to get their permission to enter the township, and Mr. Vasser says he hasn't heard anything further on the offer. The South Cape May problem is also hampered by the fact that the dune runs along an area which is privately owned. The county, however, has spent several ihousands of dollars in the past-' repairing the dune and a county-installed drainage outfall line, which has been damaged several times by waves. Mayor Vasser said Monday he will have to consider the expenditure of borough funds to build up an old sod bank along the borough's southern border — if the township doesn't take action to repair the dune within its borders

The son of Dr. and Mrs. Jae Shim of this' community, David never thought he had a chance to win the contest. His art teacher. Mrs. Walter Keene, head of the school art department, announced the contest and like everyone else, David didn’t think much more about it.
