"YOU COULD HEAR a pin drop." That's what Wildwood Bowl Manager Bob Aquilante said of the moment just before "Flash" Hughes bowled his tenth frame in a Thursday Night Men’s League game on Jan. 3. The reason: when all was said and done. Flash, shown above, bowled a 296 (of a possible 360) for the game, and had a series total of 633. Flash has been bowling for 20 years; he bowls in three leagues at Wildwood Bowl; and he practices every other day. Flash, who works for Bell Tel and lives In Erma, also bowled a 276 ( 626 series total) on Dec. 28. Makes It sound easy, doesn't he!
I hope some of you saw the excellent television special on Jan & Dean a couple of years ago. It accurately showed their risq from high school students to pop stars, only to have their world crumble when Jan Berry
was involved in a nearfatal car accident. Partially crippled and left with some brain damage, it’s been a long, hard road back for Jan Berry. But. Jan &Dean have been giving
ncerts again, and are rently doing some new
•rding.
"Deadman’s Curve” United Artists) is a fine ampling of Jan & Dean's biggest hits. Besides the title track, this long-player includes other smashes, such as "Surf City," "Little Old Lady From Pasadena." and "Ride the Wild Surf." Jan & Dean's
records always excelled thanks to their overpowering production and their extremely pleasing vocals. These recordings hold up well, and this is one writer who anxiously awaits new albums by Jan & Dean. Their story is an amazing one. and it's about time they are financially rewarded for their struggle. The Romantics are a new four-piece band from Detroit, who could quite easily find themselves with some hit singles. Their debut album for Nemperor is an exciting record. The boys have obviously been inspired by the greats of rock and roll, including The
Beatles, Rolling Stones and Dave Clark Five, as they play with a great deal of energy and their songwriting is melodic, sharp, and to the point. No frills, just solid performances, making one believe The Romantics are going to be leaders in the '80's. Frank Zappas "Joe’s Garage Acts II & III" (Zappa) is a muddled, disorganized rock opera Whereas The Mothers Of Invention/ which Zappa fronted in the late sixties, were prime rock satirists, lately Zappa has sounded contrived. There’s nothing here but offensive lyrics and meandering solos. One would be much better off searching for old albums by The Mothers, or buying Zappa's "Hot Rats.” a record which is proof Frank Zappa can play guitar when he sets his mind to it. England's XTC aren’t for everyone. A couple of tracks. "Life Begins At The Hop" and "Making Plans For Nigel” are oddly commercial, but the rest are a little offbeat, to say the least. Nevertheless. ’’Drums And Wires” (Virgin) can be a rewarding listening experience for the more adventurous of you. This is pop musk of the future, blending disco, new wave, electronics, and conventional rock and roll, and, all in all, it's certainly entertaining. Their current American tour should spark some radio response, so keep an ear open for them.
Dredging Bids Due
A\(ALON — Bids were scheduled to be received this morning (Wednesday at 10) for the dredging of 104,200 cubic yards of back bay bottom material onto graded ocean beaches between 7th and 16th Sts. The dredge spoils will be hydraulically pumped first to the llth St. beach were on outfall pipe and pumping station are said to be in jeopardy. The beach dump sites were selected by the municipality and approved by federal authorities after the U.S. Dept, of Interior objected to the originally proposed dump site at the north end of the borough near the Townsend Inlet bridge. PRIMARY PURPOSE of the project is to open up severly shoaled areas of Pennsylvania Harbor, Princeton Harbor, Third Ave. Waterway, Graven’s Thor of a re and Ingram’s Thorofare. The maintenance dredging-this is the tenth year it’s been done — is only to open up the cham nels; not to deepen privately owned bayfront boat slips. The operation will remain 30 ft. from the private docks so that the sloping of the bottom material doesn't adversely effect piling. SOME WAY of allowing individuals to get their own dredging permits associated with the borough to expedite the individual process is being looked into.
