cer Society Issues Call For Help
by Mrs. John Flanigan RIO GRANDE - Volunteers are needed in evey municipality of the county to help collect for the 1980 crusade against cancer. This is the most important job one may ever hold. The funds collected go to save lives right here in Cape May County, as well as elsewhere in the state and nation. In the 1940’s one in four cancer victims was still alive five years after treatment. Now the ratio is one in three, and this year this represents 65,000 people. Remember, cancer can strike anyone at jjny age in fact, cancer kills more children 3 to 14 than any other disease. However, cancer strikes more frequently with advancing age.
One in four Americans will have cancer. There are over 3 million Americans alive today who have a history of cancer, 2 million of them with diagnosis five or more years old. While some of these 2 million people still have evidence of cancer, in general, they can be considered cured. In 1980, about 785,000 people will be diagnosed as having urancer. However, about one-third of all those who get cancer this year will be alive at least five years
after treatment.
About 131,000 people with cancer will probably die in 1980 who might have been saved by earlier treatment. These statistics do not
include skin cancer,
j Cancer is not hopeless. Continuing research into diagnosis and treatment at'e bringing startling rtsults. Fifty drugs have been found effective

against certain cancers and more, currently in the testing stages, show promise. More treatments have been developed for use in combination or singly, while surgery is now more precise. The statistics in this area are overwhelming. What you as a possible crusade volunteer need to know is that the funding you collect are divided as follows: Research—32.4j percent, public education—16.7 percent, professional education—9.7 percent, patient services (locally to provide information, counseling, nursing and homemaking services, transportation, dressings and loan closet Items-)-11.7 percent, community services—7.7 percent fund raising—12.1 percent, and management and administrative—9.7
percent.
With these statistics fresh in your mind, call the office of the Cape May County Unit of the American Cancer Society and volunteer a little time to save a life, maybe of someone you love. Phone Helen Pulaski, executive director, at 886-1154. Mrs. Flanigan is the 1980 ACS Crusade chairman
for the county.
