Anyone who has ever painted out of doors will confirm that as we look around, what appears to our eyes as the simple, stable fact of color is actually an ever changing process. The most obvious color changes occur at sunrise and sunset. As the sky screams for our attention we may overlook the happenings around us and on us as we turn bright pink or orange or purple. These color changes of the sky are happening

Broadway Review Set By ‘Gems BEESLEYS PT. - The Gems of Cape May County met recently at Tuckahoe Inn and discussed plans for the staging of a Senior Citizen Broadway Review from New York City in Cape May Convention Hall in the near future. continually As we walk on the beach and watch the ncean turn silver then blue then grey we may not notice that the red of our bathing suit is also changing. It is a less perceptible change since it always retains some redness, but it may be a yellower red or bluer; lighter or darker. A painter must learn to see this change of color through sustained observation. Color charges are more easily recognized on a white surface which contributes no hue of its own. One can develop a more sensitive eye for color simply by looking out the window occasionally during the day to a white house in the neighborhood. Observe not only the color of the light reflecting off the wall but also the color of the shadows which changes accordingly, moment to moment. There are times between dusk and dawri when color is most dramatic such as late afternoon when the light turns golden and the shadows long and blue. When one can see a white surface reflecting color, one can begin to notice the more subtle changes in the

red bathing suit. As a cloud passes over the sun. it might be noticed that the red of the suit appears redder without the interference of direct sunlight and shadow. When Palnling a picture, one should be aware of the color of the light source as all of the objects within are affected, producing a harmonious color key which unifies all of the elements. Another phenomenon which affects the ap pearance of color is that of contrast. If the red bathing suit is seen next to a green towel, for example, the red will appear redder due to the extreme contrast Id painting, one can thus brighten colors by surrounding them with contrasting hues, used purely or greyed for more subtle effects. Imagine how useful this can be when painting a figure. Flesh tones can be modified by the surrounding colors. They would appear more luminous when placed against a cool background So would a lemon appear more yellow in a blue bowl. The observation of color is enriching to the senses. It seems that the more one looks, the more colorful the world becomes. Determined viewing will switch on the ability of perception which will make the world as formerly witnessed seem black and white by comparsion.
