Outstanding Players Honored By City
51-B Season Record For The Panther Marching Band The 1979-80 season proved the Panther Marching- Band was one of the finest playing bands in their division which includes Pennsylvania. New Jersey. Maryland. Delaware and New York Our first performance came at Millville on Oct 12 Panthers lost to Oakcrest by an 0.5 point margin They defeated Glassboro. Edgewood. Southern and Vineland. Next, on Oct. 21. they again lost to Oakcrest by 2.5 points Competition included Absegami. In terboro of Pennsylvania. Lenape. Clayton. Washington Township. Edgewood and Elkton. Maryland The following week they participated in the National Championships, sponsored by Ruffles aqd Flourishes Magazine The Panthers lost the closest ol all competitions for the national title in Group C. They scored at 68 9 losing by 0.2 of a point to McKeans of Wilmington. Del In finishing second. Middle Township defeated 1 bands from North Warren. Archbishop Ryan, St Joseph’s CYO in Massachusetts. Salisbury. Maryland. Hudson County CYO from Massachusetts. Penns Grove High School. St Williams CYO. Boston. West Deptford. Paulsboro.
SEA ISLE CITY - Seven local young men who were outstanding players on the Ocean City High School Football Team this past season were honored recently by the City of Sea Isle. The local players, along with their coach Ed Woolley, were guests during a dinner in their honor at the College Inn here, hosted by city fathers.
Inlerboro. Pa.. Catasauqua. Archbishop Wood from Warminster. Pa., Washington Township and Eastern Regional On Nov 4. the Panthers defended their Chapter I Championships by defeating Oakcrest. However, they lost by 0.7 of a point to Penns Grove, a band they had already beaten in previous competition. They did beat Absegami. Paulsboro. Clayton. West Deptford. Glassboro. Washington Township and Oakcrest On Nov II, the finale of the season was held at the Allentown. Pa. Stadium for the Atlantic Coast Championship The Panthers fell to fourth Mace; Penns Grove was the winner. The final tally for the season had the Panthers beating 51 other bands from among the 57 they competed against -Director Dick Ludwig
Each player received commendation in the form of an official city resolution embossed on a plaque. Recipients included Carl Gansert, Mtek McCarthy, John Boxman. Sam Goodman, Steve Costantino. Ed Barr and Rocky Costantlno. The plaques were presented by Mayor Dorn Raffa and Commissioner Andy Bednarek.
JV Footballers Are Competition Their record was three wins and four losses, but the JV team isn’t out to make a winning record Their job is to furnish opposition to the varsity players in their daily workouts. I can be proud of the way the boys performed Outstanding players were James Matthews (who scored nine touchdowns i, Jeff Tomlin, Jeff Tanner. Keith Seaman and Tom Nicholas, Trip llendee, Mike Hubbard and Don Tozer. They are all varsity prospects for next year, but there will probably be position changes to accommodate vacancies in varsity positions and/or because of changes in offensive and defensive sets, formations and strategies. -Coach raul Yerk
