’ SWA INTON - In the wake of reports that the FBI has been called in to investigate the Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority, the MUA has declared its intention to conduct business "under glass." The authority, has also changed its stance on Rep. William Hughes, who reportedly initiated the investigation following the MUA’s firing of former authority director Walter Taft. The congressman had been critized recently by the MUA for his alleged failure to support the authority's position regarding a compromise with the federal government on the Environmental Protection Agency edict against sewering areas at nr below the 10 ft. elevation level in the Cape May Regional south of the Cope May Canal. In an MUA news release issued Jan. 25. both the public scrutiny and Hughes matters were touched upon: CAPE MAY County Municipal Utilities Authority Chairman John Vinci on Wednesday said he would urge other members of the authority to open the site selection process to the public. "We have nothing to hide," Vinci declared at a press conference prior to the regular MUA meeting. Nothing can be accomplished without public support If the public understands the project, they will support it. "Our only reason for closing these meeting in the past was to protect the property owners from speculators." he insisted. •THE POTENTIAL purchase of property has always been a sensitive area and confidential in nature But I have no reluctance in opening future site selection
process to the public." Questioned on the EPAFBI probe that was broached in the press, Vinci reiterated the willingness of the authority and its staff to cooperate and its responsibility to operate prudently and carefully. Vinci was joined by MUA vice chairman Robert Anzalone who said, "All members of the MUA openly welcome the investigation We want to clear the air so that we can stop operating under a cloud." VINCE SAID. "We are cognizant that a project ol this magnitude will always be the subject of constructive criticism. I think that is proper." Vinci also revealed "positive developments" in his communications with Congressman William Hughes regarding the federal Environmental Protection Agency's sewer connection restriction in the Cape May Region. "We are encouraged that Congressman Hughes and his office are desirous of being helpful." Vinci said. IN OTHER action, the authority approved the purchase of the wastewater treatment site, outfall easement and eight lots to provide access from the City of Ocean City for $290,000. A $15 million refinancing of maturing project notes was approved. The transaction will take place February 28 with the dbtes maturing September 1982. The commissioners learned the $2.7 million force main contract in Ocean Citv has only been changed by I'a percent since it was awarded. According to the engineers, changes usually go up to 10 percent. A $97,980 change' order purchasing 12,000 cubic yards of fill material was also approved
