Sounds

Mention Motown Records and one immediately thinks of Smokey Robinson From his glorious days with the legendary Miracles to the present, his silky smooth vocals have been a pleasant highlight of soul music. Where There’s Smoke (Tamla/Motown) is another fine long-player for Smokey Robinson. His singing is flawless and the arrangements are lush, yet powerful. A disco mix dominates, but Smokey Robinson doesn't fall victim to mechanical formulized disco. His music comes ' from the heart, and that's what soul music has always been about. Since 1964, Gary Farr has been an extremely talented, yet always overlooked British vocalist Through many bands and albums, he's been ignored by record buyers and critics alike, and it's seemed he would never get recognition. Maybe his luck will change as his new group. Lion, has a strong debut with Running All Night (A&M). GARY FARR'S vocals combine the passion of the blues with the freedom of jazz and his band runs through a standard guitar/keyboard rock set thaj would be at home on any album-oriented-rock station. Gary Farr has worked long and hard on his craft, and while Lion doesnlt represent his best moments on vinyl, it is. nevertheless a pleasant listening experience. The J. Geils Band seems

to have louna new me on their Love Stinks (EMI) album. While the band lays down a tough, gritty bottom, Peter Wolf does a credible job with the lead vocals. The tunes are memorable, the playing strong and consistent, and this could be the record to ease them back into the superstardom they found early in the seventies. THE J. GEILS Band might be firmly rooted in

the past — as far as blues and rock are concerned — but they sound contemporary. Ex-Small Faces keyboardist Ian McLagan's Troublemaker (Mercury) is a predictable record. He takes no chances, the songwriting is average gi best, and his voice is often rather weak. McLagan does have the knack for being stunning, yet subtle on his wide variety of keyboard instruments. Unfortunately, I think Ian McLagan would be more at home giving support to a band, instead of trying to run the show

himself.
