Spring Activities At The Wetlands Institute

STONE HARBOR - The activities and lecture schedule for the winter and spring of 1980 at the Wetlands Institute on Stone Harhor Blvd is underway. The 8:15 p.m. lecture series began Jan. 26; continued Feb. 23 and includes these presentations for this spring and early summer: March 29 — "For You, By You”—* potpourri of slides by institute members in celebration of the coining of spring. Members and would-be members are asked to contact the institute by mid-month if you intend to show slides; April 26—"Highee Beach, A Close Look"—by Roy Sayre, assistant wildlife biologist with the N.J. Fish, Game and Wildlife; May 24—"What’s in the Ocean Besides the Water?”—by Robin Zimmer, marine pollution specialist with the N.J. Marine Advisory Service; June 28—"Cape May County Wildlife ir—designed with children in mind and featuring Joan Galli, nongame biologist with the .N.J. Fish, Game and Wildlife. The institute is also offering a guided outdoor exploration, 6 p.m. March 21. It will he a twilight

expedition In search of woodcocks performing their aerial mating displays. The exploration will be free to members; $1.50 for non-members. Two adult courses, are also in the offing this season at the institute: Coastal Ecology—all about plants, animals and man—meeting Wednesday evenings at 7:30 April 23,30. May 7 and 14 (a Saturday field trip is to be decided). Anne Galli will instruct; and Astronomy—all about the stars, moon and sky—meeting Wednesday evenings 7:30 to 9:30 March 26, April 2,9, and 16, and featuring Dave Ward as instructor. Courses are $10 for member; $15 for nonmembers. Corps Hiring For Summer

Conservation TRENTON - The Department of * Environmental Protection is now recruiting for the 1980 Youth Conservation Corps. Deadline to apply is March 15 and applications are available at all New Jersey High Schools, State Parks and Forests. The Y€C is a summer work-learning experience for persons 15-18 years old. Enrollees work outdoors on conservation projects such as building trails, improving wildlife habitat, and developing park facilities. Enrollees will be paid $3.10 per hour, less $2 per day for room and hoard at residential camps. THE YCC program is being expanded this year to employ approximately 450 youngsters at 30 State and County Parks and Forests, compared to 370 enrollees

last year.

All applications are sent to the National YCC Selection Office at Falls Church, Va. Selection is made randomly from all applicants by computer. Applicants will be recruited statewide for residential camps, while enrollees for nonresidential camps will be sought from nearby communities. Residential camps will he located at Belleplain (Cape May County), Stokes (Sussex County), and Wawayanda (Passaic

County).

NON-R ES1DENTIAL projects will he located at Allaire, Chqfesequake, and Monmouth Battlefield (Monmouth), Cape May Point (Cape May), Round Valley and D & R Cana) (Hunterdon), Island Beach

(Ocean), Parvin and Fort Mott (Salem), Wharton and Lebanon (Burlington), Hacklehamey (Morris), Ramapo (Bergen), Worthington (Warren), Hopatong (Sussex), and Washington Crossing (Mercer). An additional 180 youngsters will be selected to attend six (6) other YCC projects operated by the U.S. Department of the Interior. Federal residential camps will he located at McGuire AFB (Burlington), Lakehurst NAS (Ocean), Delaware Water Gap (Sussex), and Camp Alpine (Bergen) Federal nonresidential projects will be located at Great Swamp Wildlife Refuge, Morristown Historic Park (Morris), and Sandy Hook (Monmouth) ;
