Medicare Will Cover Skilled Nursing Care WILDWOOD - Many people in Cape May County aren’t award that Medicare hospital insurance can cover care in a skilled nursing facility following a period of hospitalization, according to Delton Brooks Social Security manager here. “Sometimes" Mr. Brooks noted, "patients no longer need all the services that hospitals provide, but still need daily skilled nursing or rehabilitation services as inpatients. In such a case, the doctor can transfer a patient to a skilled nursing facility. Not all facilities qualify as skilled nursing facilities. When conditions required for Medicare coverage are met, hospital insurance will cover these services in a skilled nursing facility. Semiprivate room; regular nursing services; rehabilitation services, such as physical, occupational, and speech therapy, drugs furnished by the facility while the person is a patient; medical supplies such as splints and casts; use of appliances and equipment furnished by the facility. When Medicare can cover a stay in a skilled nursing facility, it will pay for all • costs for covered services for the first 20 days in a benefit period and for all covered costs except $22.50 a day for an additional 80 days in each benefit period, Mr. Brooks said. Additional information about services covered hy Medicare may be obtained at the Wildwood Social Security office, at 136 E. Spicer Ave. The phone number is 800-272-1 111. 9 P.M.
