The Hcnild and The Lantern

This is a fishing column and lately I've been talking about everything connected with fishing and, perhaps, some subjects not directly related to the angling scene. I had a visit Wednesday from Loa Dupuy of North Cape May. Lou told me of a new CB club that is forming in Lower Township, in fact, this is what he wrote down: "Sometime ago a group of local CBers got together and formed a new club using Channel 1. At 8 every evening there is a roll call to see who is available and in service. At present the club consists of 20 turkeys (m4n) and 20 beavers (women), and still growing. "THE NAME of the club is Handy Helpers. Our slogan is 'come down to Channel 1, and have some fun.' On Jan. 26, the group met at Keene's Kitchen in North Cape May to get a look at each other. "As the fishing Season nears, some 20 to 25 members who own their own boats are working hard getting ready to go fishing. Their XYL’s (wives > will keep their ears open to hear from their turkeys (men), and be ready in case a call comes in for help. "I think this is a good time to acquaint all'CBers with the Coast Guard land lines. The Cape May number is 884-3491 and the Fort esq ue number is 1-447-4422 if calling from Cape May County. "Should a call come in always get the Island ‘Tour’ Of Galapagos STONE HARBOR - Area wildlife photographer Harold Conner will present an illustrated "tour" of the unique Galapagos Islands, 8:15 this Saturday evening at the Wetlands Institute on Stone Harbor Blvd. The public slide presentation will show some of the tremendous variety of birds, animals and plants—some of which are found nowhere else on Earth—on the islands where nature reigns supreme, free from human disturbances.

following information before calling the Coast Guard: 1. Name of Boat; 2. Registration number; 3. Location; 4. Size and color of boat; 5. Nature of trouble, and how many people on board. The coast Guard will ask these questions so have the answers ready in order to save precious time. "NOW. THAT'S very good advice and I can’t think of anything I can add to this message. "As I’m sitting here contemplating on our next fishing season, snow 'is falling and it seems an awful long way till spring, but when we get over this month of February, we should be able to see light on another season. I’ve got some rods and rqpis stuffed in a comer that should be taken cafe of and I know there’s about 50 lures that need refurbishing, but T haven’t had a minute,’ and it will soon be time to go fishing; and then I’ll realize I haven't worked on them.” THESE LONG winter evenings are the time to catch ap on your tackle, but if you're like me anything that wasn't done at the end of the season just doesn’t seem to get done. I think I'll start tomorrow, and clean one rod at a time and then I'll get on those lures. Mackerel season should be here right now, but, unfortunately. the Janie TV 11 is on Roseman’s railway undergoing repairs and I’ll just have to wait for a try at those Bostons until she gets fixed. There's a lot of talk going around as to what the gas price is going to do to fishing next year, and the majority of people seem to think that the fellows with trailered boats won’t come down towing their boats as much, and will use the head boats for their sport. I BELIEVE this is a little wishful thinking on the part of the head boat captains. Those fellows are going to need a lot of help next year especially the big boats like the Thunderbird, The Island Queen, and the Big Jim II. Their prices are probably going higher too, as the inflation spiral keeps going up. Money problems will definitely be with us this next season. I can't believe the politicians are pushing for a salt water fishing license again in the light of all the angling industry has been going through, but Lou Rodia, who has constantly worked diligently against

this license, has made several talks to organizations warning ttonn that they better get ready to fight this issue again. It seems the politicians never give up when they see a potential tax dollar that’s not coming in. I don’t think there's a doubt in the world that the salt water fishing license would hurt our fishing, but here again we have nonanglers in command at the top, and they couldn't care less about our angling pleasure. I learned today of another loss of an old time friend, Damon Gray, the barber of Hatteras. Since 1954 Damon has whittled Canadian Geese for me from cedar I brought him from Dennisville. His mobiles are in many Cape May County homes, and arc flying as a living memorial to him. I'm going down to Hatteras again this spring, Lord willing, but it won't be the same without Damon.

- Avalon Is For Real In Tennis COURT HOUSE - Avalon Real Estate, led by the strong performance of its male players, blasted Neils 38-18 in recent Town Team Tennis action at the Jersey Cape Racquet Club. Bill Soens paced Avalon to an early 8-3 lead with his victory over Bob Heidom in Men’s singles play. 'Sbe women’s singles match proved to be one of the best of the night as Barbara Kerr rallied from a 5-0 deficit to come close-but-not-enough in bowingB6 to Neil's Cathie Smith. The women’s doubles match also proved to he a real slugfest as Avalon's Joyce GoaM and June Mossbrook fought their way to a well earned 84} win over Barbara Taylor and Joan Hughes. The men’s doubles match proved to Neil’s eventual downfall as they were forced to default that position because of a shortage of players thus giving Avalon an 84) advantage. The evening’s final match pitted husband against wife with husband coming out on top as Lyn Smith and Karen Wetherill,

Hughes Backs Moving of Olympic Games WASHINGTON Congressman Bill Hughes has added his support to efforts to move the 1980 Olympics from Moscow to another country He also expressed the view that the games should have a permanent, neutral home In voting recently for a House Resolution to reldcate the games, Hughes said he hopes that other nations will now 1 follow the U S. lead. The Ocean City Democrat said he supported the resolution with some reservations about the effectiveness of a U S. Olympic boycott and the danger such a precedent might create for future Olympic games HE SAID he was convinced to vote for the resolution by what he called the need for the country to unite behind the President’s policies during a time when U.S. resolve and strength is being tested around the world
