The Place to Me This Weekend For many Jersey Cape homeowners, the hotttjt action in Casino City this weekend will be at the Deauville Hotel (Brighton Ave. and the Boardwalk) — and there won’t be a card table or a slot machine in sight. What will be there this Saturday and Sunday is Congressman Bill Hughes' second conference and exhibition on Energy Alternatives for Consumers. His first gathering of government and industry leaders in. the alternative energy movement last year attracted 16.000. Admission is free to the two-day show which is intended to give individuals a firsthand look ilk conservation and alternative energy equipment and supplies — and to provide an opportunity for citizens to talk on a one-to-one basis with knowledgeable government and private industry representatives about specific needs and problems. IN ADDITION TO the continuous showing of movies and other audi-visual displays, the conference and exhibition will include working displays of electric vehicles, solar, wind and bio-mass alternative energy devices, which are available right now for the energyconscious consumer and businessperson. The following week in Cape May Convention Hall, the County Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a two-day (Feb. 29 and March 1) Energy Conservation and Home Improvement Show which will feature displays and information by area businesses and industry who are ready now to help homeowners get more for their energy dollar through im-* proved conventional energy equipment and the installation of alternative energy devices. With home heating oil sure to reach a dollar a gallon shortly and with the price of natural gas and electricity going up — it cannot be stressed enough to consumers that they take advantage of every opportunity they can to learn ways of conserving energy and how to utilize those virtually free energy sources, the sun and wind. THE HOMEOWNER WHO doesn’t conserve and convert in the relatively near future is the one who will be gambling with his or her wellbeing. While our government seems overall to have foresaken the energy needs of the individual in favor of the continued profits of the major energy giants, there are some forward-looking 'people in govqrnrtient who saw the handwriting on the wall. Congressman Hughes is one of those who realized early on that the old pioneer spirit was going to have to be rekindled on the grass roots level. He has taken the initiative in this area to bring alternative energy know-how to the consumer. It is up to us as individuals to take it from here. That is why traveling to Atlantic City this weekend won't be a gamble.

“I'M IN FAVOR OF DRAFTING WOMEN. IT'S DRAFTING MEN THAT I'M OPPOSED TO..."
Township Needs A Manager To Ihe Editor: Your editorial of Feb. 13 (Paying for Gov’t) wo* to the point. I wonder however did the township get as far as It has the way it it run. Taxpayers come to meetings, request various things to benefit the township be done. They come back months or a year later and the matter's never looked after. Our township is dirty many places; lots are littered; Bayshore Rd. end to end is littered on the rodfhides. Much has to be dine. Jt" Our (oil and) stone streets were a wasteifytaxpayers' money as stones do nothing (ortly chip the paint on cars). The noisy, loose stones were to be swept up but was never done. Just too many promises not lived up to. I could go on for pages, but what's the use. I think as it is now. the township needs a manager or whatever. Vincent McMahon Villas Twp. Committee Doesn’t Need the Leaders in the Back To the Editor: As o taxpayer and reKistered voter of Lower Township. / attended the Feb. II Lower Township committee meeting in which Committeeman Jack Moran was asked to resign because of a $15,000 federal tax lien levied against his business. I felt sorry for Mr. Moran that he should be put in an embarrassing position to answer questions concerning his personal life, but who caused these problems? I should also say Mr. Moran is an elected o//iciai of this township and his personal life is now an open book as is any other official. As taxpayer, we have the right to know the good and bad of any official. I feel Mr. Moran answered in a direct and truthful manner by telling the taxpayers he plans to rectify problems, and he has no plans to resign. If Maurice (township GOP leader) Catarcio had been at this meeting, he would have known the issue was then dead because of Mr. Moran's answer. If anyone has . tried to humiliate or intimidate anyone, it has been Mr. Catarcio. Could it be Mr. Catarcio is trying to intimidate Mr. Moran by stirring the pot because of his tax difficulties into resigning himseip Is that the reason Mr Catarcio had a news release charging Committeewoman Peggie Bieberbach and Franklin Hal,burner of conspiring against Mr. Moran? It would be to the taxpayers' benefit if Mr. Catarcio and his "Bloc” stopped conducting the meetings/rom the back of the room and let the Township Committee conduct the meetings from the dais. I feel they have the intelligence to conduct the meetings themselves without Mr. Catarcio's help. If Mr. Catarcio wants to conduct any meetings/rom the dais he should run for Committeeman in the November Election. Dolores Lindholm Villas Questions & Statements To the Editor: A few questions came to mind which I would like to share with the residents and readers of Lower Township: 1. What does the term "Maverick Republican" mean? I was under the Impression that the beginning of Mr. Franklin Halbruner's political career was established when he successfully defeated his opponents in the 1977 Republican primary; 2. How can Mr. Maurice Catarcio be sure of his facts? I have reasonable good eyesight and hearing, and I was present at Monday nights township committee meeting and to the best of my knowledge, he was not. 3. Why is it that everyone is always "Conspiring?" To quote two basic statements; "A government for the people and by the people,*and "I may not agree with what you say but / will defend to the death your right to say it." It is my belief that the man cannot and/or will not appreciate the efforts of the residents of Lower Township to make our governing body better for everybody. Domlnk A. Santo Cold Spring
Wednesday, t WIUU'J JUrW— Wednewtoy, February Zt, 1*80 Thanks for Cooperation, Dedication & Service To the Editor: With the co-operation of Cape May City Manager Fred Coldren and City Council and the Permission of Lower Township Mayor Thomas Clysdale and the Township Committee, the South Cape May Meadow Dune was repaired. Cape May County initially started the project with their equipment followed by Cape May City. Mr. Wayne Rambo, long interested in the situation, then volunteered his services along with other city employees. County Freeholders and Road Supervisor/Commissioner Ldtoy Reeves and Beach Erosion Chairman William Jaeger, were also instrumental in the initiation of this project. { We understand the rlp-rdp now deposited on the future city parking lot will be removed and if these spoils can be placed behind the dune, it will add to better stability. We. the officials and citizens of West Cape May. extend to you. many thanhs for a fine job. well done. Without the co-operation of so many dedicated and interested persons, we would be at the mercy of the elements. To each and every one of the above dedicated persons and others who rendered service of any kind, we thank you. Mayor John Vasser Jr. West Cape May
Major National Initiative W Boyd Tyler Ir. To the Editor: 1 want to congratulate you for your January 30 column "Ocean and Bay Soundings." It is extremely well done. As you may know by this time. I did support the 'resolution before the Congress calling on the U.S. Olympic Committee to avoid the games in Moscow unless the Soviet Union withdraws from Afghanistan. I believe it is important for Americans to support the President on this major national policy Initiative. William J. Hughes Member of Congress
Mental Health Should Be Everybody’s Concern To the Editor: Up until now. no strong professional, consumer or advocacy group has developed political muscle. As citizens we have a right to participate in decision mahing regarding matters which affect all of our lives. The law requires that a majority of consumer par ticipants be included in the area-wide health planning agencies being established across the nation. What needs to be done? We need to work toward developing a network of local organizations which can work with existing organizations, or create new systems, but which become on going advocates of those who make up community mental health programs. We need to work toward evaluating programs periodically, primarily on its impact on those who are recipients of mental health services. Regarding informing the public, we need to publicize our mental health services because many individuals. particularly low income minority and the disadvantaged often — very often — do not know the various service options when they are faced with a mental health crisis. Because options are nol readily known, the emotional crisis is worsened by a delay in securing prompt attention. We need a broad based information and referral system which would be a significant step in accessing ■ timely treatment. We need, without a doubt. 24-hour crisis intervention here in Cape May County. To put it plainly, immediate help, if just someone to talk with. We need to provide natural settings for mentally ill individuals. We want them to have their chance for a better life, for independent living in community based therapeutic settings, adequately supervised with all the most necessary support systems which will enable them to live more dignified and productive lives. We need to realize that despite limitations, severely disabled persons are only partially disabled. As individuals. they have recognizable strengths which should be enhanced. Like every other person, they need personal support systems consisting of people who care for them as individuals. We need to help mentally disabled individuals apply for income, medical and other bene/its to which they are entitled. Above all, we need alternatives to'institutions. How can we define mental illness? It may be just an inability to cope with the stresses of everyday life. It could be many things. Let uf all work together as professionals, providers, consumers, and citizens to eliminate the sitma of “mental illness" and work together as a team here in Cape May County to improve the mental health system. By writing our legislators — federal, state, county and local — let us work toward passing bills which would fund the existing programs and initiate new and advanced programs which are presently in the planning ^ stages. You can do your.share, you can make a great impact. ■ Help us to help you. Come to our meetings at 7 p.m. every fourth Monday of every month at the Cape May County Library. If transportation is a problem, we will arrange it for you. t For further Information, call MS-1036. Eugene Boooocore Rio Grande
