Defense Ready
Civil AVALON — When snow or hurricanes threaten, the local Civil Defense staff turns its radiofc\on. CD director T. Griffith Sloan can give an order that will quickly staff the emergency headquarters located on the second floor of the police administration building. Among the staff members are radio operators Norman Unruh (K3DXW) and William Thomas (WZ2ZMC). As licensed ham operators, they have the capabilities in the emergency headquarters to communicate worldwide. ••Communications is vital in any emergency and we feel Avalon’s planned capahilities surpass many in surrounding communities,” Sloan said. "We, are constantly monitoring fire, police, hospital and weather forecasts from Atlantic City and Delaware. In addition to this we have radio communications with the local government trucks and worldwide with RACES, the amateur ham ban." THE TELEPHONE number at Civil Defense headquarters is 967-8229 in an emergency it will be answered round the clock. Civil Defense power won’t be interrupted since an emergency generator will switch on immediately in the event of a power failure. ' * •‘We'll he manned but not fully activated until an alert is declared," Sloan explained. The alert warning would come after consulation between Mayor Ellsworth Armacost and Sloan. As Sloan points out, Civil Defense is actually coordinating all local government efforts; it isn't commanding. According to state law, however, the Hvil Defense director is officially in charge during such an emergency. Arson Tip Increased To $1,000 COURT HOUSE - Recognizing the growing arson problem in the Jersey Cape, several insurance companies who write a large amount of fire insurance in Cape May County have contributed a total of $500 toward the “Arson Alert" program sponsored < by the Independent Insurance Agents Association of Cape May County. The contribution by the insurers has allowed the I.I.A.C.M.C. to increase the reward to a maximum of $1,000 for an arson tip which helps in the detection of an arsonist. The “Arson Alert’’ program was established in October with a reward of $500. which is now increased to $1,000. Anyone with an arson tip can call the hotline number at 46S7181 All information received will be treated in the strictest confidence. * Hospital Employer COURT HOUSE - Burdette Tomlin Hospital is one of the largest single private employers in the county, according to administrator William Waldron whp reports the Jersey Cape's only hospital has an $11 million expense budget and a weekly payroll of over $100,000.
"In order for this or any Civil Defense plan to work effectively, it takes firemen, policemen and volunteers working together. After all we only have a staff of 21. and there are a lot more people than that in Avalon in winter hnd summer," Sloan noted. “AVALON’S residents can rest assured that plans are constantly being reviewed for speedy and safe evacuation, should an emergency situation arise," according to Mayor Armacost. The borough has purchased two heavy duty plows in addition to other snow removal equipment already in service here.
And a six-wheel Civil Defense truck with power winch was recently put into
service.
Mr. Sloan reminded all Avalon residents who would need special assistance during an emergency to call James Henry at 967-3450 so their names can he recorded. "We have about 21 names at present on the list, which we consider a fair amount, but there may be several others who need this added help," Mr. Sloan noted; adding: "I want everyone in Avalon to remember the emergency telephone number of Civil Defense headquarters is 967-8229.”
