show in a water color as weak hue. clumsy handling. timid stroke*, meaningless strokes, overworking and lots of sparkle Fortunately, in this instance, they stand on .a ground of good drawing so they are easily seen Also, they are on D'Arches paper, worth saving if only to boll down for the remaking A GOOD many of the mistake* made can be due to the artist's rapport with oils which are stiff and viscous and easily manipulated, layer upon •layer. Unless one is restricted to dry-brush techniques, one will find that water .colors do things on their own. often In opposition to the handler’s wishes A rich color on the brush may unexpectedly fade into a pale tint when applied to a damp paper. A stain may appear between two passages of paint or a puddle form where the paper has stretched. These accidents of the paint should not. however, discourage the artist from using a loaded brush and aggressive strokes. They are. in fact, part of the beauty of the medium ANOTHER adjustment to be made In the transition between oils and water colors is the time involved executing the piece. It is possible, of course, to spend months on a water color, .but personal preference at this time lies with it as a spontaneous experience. Any painting carried over to the next day risks being overworked By doing a water color start-to-finish In one session, one can witness a complete episode with its high points and bumblings and then be done with it. Mind, that this artist is approaching the medium at this time with an exploring attitude, not with the idea of making pretty pictures. Because of this, a mistake made is not a disaster but rather a point of learning created by pushing beyond one's limits. Fox Faces Challenge In District Bid MILMAY — A second Republican has announced his candidacy for the Second Congressional seat currently held by Democrat Bill Hughes of Ocean City. He is John J. Mahoney, 35. an English teacher at Vineland High School and adjunct professor of English for Cumberland County College, formerly instructing at Leesburg State Prison. A resident of this Atlantic County community, Mr. Mahoney follows by several months Cape May County Sheriff Beech Fox in announcing his candidacy as a Republican for the congressional nomination. Mr. Mahoney’s campaign chairman, Richard Nedahon of Cumberland County, said in a news release that the Mahoney campaign already has 175 street volunteers. “We don’t really expect to get any support from the oldtime party bosses," Mr. Nedahon said. "All they have is money; we have people who will commit themselves and vote.” He also stated the Mahoney "team" is directing its energies toward a June primary
battle.
Mr. Mahoney is the associate vice chairman of the N.J. Young Republicans, the Atlantic County state delegate to that group and the Republican area leader of Buena Vista Township in Atlantic County.
