Bradley jTo Push Fuel Efficiency WASHINGTON - Sen. Hill Bradley, says he will join Sen. Henry Jackson, D-Wash. in sponsoring now legislation designed to increase fuel efficiency in American-made automobiles. Key provisions, Bradley said, would direct U.S. automakers to double current fleetwide averages to 40 MPG by 1995 and also would give the companies tax breaks if they are able to exceed economy standards required in the proposed legislation. “At a time when we are perilously dependent on insecure foreign sources of oil and imported automobiles have grown to more than 20 percent of the U.S. market, it is essential to achieve far better fuel efficiency in American cars and the entire *transportation sector.’Bradley. a member of both the Energy ^.pnd Finance Commith in a news release “With gasoline climbing every mor . intolerable to have typical U.S, automobiles getting 14. 15 or 16 MPG. particularly since we have the technology to produce cars that could get twice as much mileage. "Foreign carmakers are selling models right now that get 35 miler per gallon l>asl month, roughly one of every four cars sold in the United States was an import, while thousands of U.S. autoworkers were being laid off indefinitely. And unless we can boost our exports. Japan could become the world’s largest automobile producer this year. "We must start moving promptly — not only to save fuel in our cars, but also to save American jobs This kind of legislation should be considered, along with other potential remedies. This is the first in A series of tough auto efficiency efforts that I intend to make this year." the New Jersey Democrat said

ERMA - Some 550 students and staff at the Richard Teitleman School were dismissed after lunch yesterday following a failure in the well equipment supplying the junior
high school’s water.
"Apparently dirt gets into the control mechanism," Dower Cape May Regional Schools Superintendent E.R. Keller said, causing the air pressure to stick and preventng well water from entering the 5,000 gal. holding tank. The problem
began coming from the supply lines. Keller said school would be back in session today (Wednesdayi and that the high school wasn't affected. A similar problem occurred last year but not to the extent that school had to be closed. ♦Earlier this month, some 1,100 students in the high school had two days off when the electrical supply cable shorted out — similar to a malfunction that had occurred four years
earlier.
